UPDATE: Ethiopian Airlines fully complies with Somali ultimatum; SCAA yet to comment
Friday August 23, 2024
Updated Note: This story has been updated to reflect that Ethiopian Airlines has now fully complied with the Somali Civil Aviation Authority's ultimatum by adding "Somalia" to its booking platforms, instead of partially complying as previously reported. The Somali Civil Aviation Authority has yet to comment on this development.
Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority threatened to suspend FlyDubai and Ethiopian Airlines operations within the country over sovereignty disputes and misrepresentation of Somali destinations.
Mogadishu (HOL) — Ethiopian Airlines has now fully complied with the Somali Civil Aviation Authority's (SCAA) ultimatum regarding the representation of Somali destinations on its booking platforms, averting the threat of suspension. This development follows initial reports that the airline had only partially complied with the SCAA's demands.
Flydubai, a UAE state-owned carrier, was the first to adhere to the SCAA's directive, promptly removing the term "Somaliland" from its booking page and accurately listing "Hargeisa, Somalia" as the destination. This action ensured that Flydubai's operations within Somalia continued without disruption.

Initially, Ethiopian Airlines took a more cautious approach. While the airline removed references to "Somaliland," it had opted to list Hargeisa with only the airport code (HGA) and without specifying "Somalia" as part of the destination. This partial compliance raised concerns that the airline might face suspension if it did not meet the SCAA's demands by the deadline.
In a letter dated August 22, Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew requested an extension, citing the need for more time to review and implement the necessary changes. However, the SCAA, led by Director General Ahmed Moallin Hassan, denied the extension, stating that the corrections should be completed within two days. The SCAA warned that failure to fully comply would result in the suspension of Ethiopian Airlines' operations within Somalia.
With the deadline looming, Ethiopian Airlines has updated its platforms to fully comply with the SCAA's demands, correctly listing "Hargeisa, Somalia." This compliance comes just in time to avert the potential suspension of the airline's operations within the country.
The SCAA has yet to comment on Ethiopian Airlines' compliance or the resolution of the issue.
The dispute between Somalia and Ethiopian Airlines is part of broader geopolitical tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, particularly over Ethiopia's growing ties with Somaliland. Earlier this year, Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland, which included significant strategic and economic concessions. This agreement exacerbated tensions between the two nations, leading to increased scrutiny of Ethiopian Airlines' operations by the SCAA.
Now that Ethiopian Airlines has fully complied with the SCAA's ultimatum, the immediate risk of disruptions in regional aviation will likely be averted. However, the outcome of this dispute may set a precedent for how similar issues are managed in the future, with potential implications for other international carriers operating in the region.

Somalia played it beautifully. This is why I support PM Abiy Ahmed. He makes us look good and he is easy to handle.

No, Ethiopia is a nation that played the nasty and complicated game of world colonialism including defeating one of those colonial forces. Ethiopia is a wise, mature, calm and grounded nation.
Emotions and dramas have no place in the Ethiopian political and diplomatic culture. Folks like el-sisi and Hassan sheik walk around carrying their emotions on their nose. That is not Ethiopia style.
Ethiopian airlines is not the foreign ministry of Ethiopia, it is not a political organization. So, it took appropriate and mature business like decision. MOU is the job of the two government. Talking about airlines listing before MOU's finalization is a stupid small time side show.
Both Ethiopia and Somaliland need time to make robust military preparation, make diplomatic breakthroughs in terms of key world power support of SLR statehood and be ready for all sorts of eventualities - this is called deep, far, and clear thinking!!!
Let the like of El-Sisi and Hassan bask in the dance of temporary and small time drama.
Remember - Egypt has nothing but history of being ruled by world imperial powers - Persians, Greek, Romans, Ottoman Turks, British colonialism. And, never won a war in her history. As for Somalia, let her bow to who ever feeds her temporary protection!! that is why there is hardly a Somalia nation as we speak.
Ethiopia is a different kind of Animal! The World knows us. We move calm and slow, invictus, victorious!

Italian-Somalia is simply a kid. Does not know how to play and win - renaming the variable name of the equation does not change the out come of the equation unless the equation or the model is changed. Since Italian-Somalia like Italian-Ascari land has closer affinity to the Arab world they love to make noise and be euphoric without a substance.

He bores us with Egypt and what not talk about the issue at hand. If Ethiopia can’t even keep the name of the separatists on its flag carrier which is a state owned company . The Somalilanders are having a melt down on Twitter on how they feel betrayed by Ethiopia and abiye in particular . We could have told them abiye would betray them as he did betray the Eritreans the Amharas and to some extend even some of his own gallas. What makes u think he would not betray the people of Hargeisa

ya, that tells me the depth of your thinking - tiktok driven childish noise. Sure, Somalilanders want to be free today. I wish this was possible. I share their anger, sadness and frustration. But what does that tell us? Somaliland is never and will never Somalia!! Ditto.
World powers and Ethiopian enemies can delay the freedom of Somalilanders but can't kill it. Never! As for Ethiopia, it is only a matter of when - we are a Red sea state. ditto.

And how are you going to be a Red Sea state when u are landlocked u have no sovereignty of any part of Somalia Djibouti or Eritrea so how are you going to be a Red Sea state
Perhaps u confuse the Red Sea with the blue Nile river

Re: UPDATE: Ethiopian Airlines fully complies with Somali ultimatum; SCAA yet to comment
Daydreaming. They're not even able to keep the word "Somaliland" within, as you've said it, the flagship of their economy - Ethiopian Airlines.so how are you going to be a Red Sea state?

Re: UPDATE: Ethiopian Airlines fully complies with Somali ultimatum; SCAA yet to comment
When one is deeply delusional, reasoning with such a person becomes nearly impossible. As a medical doctor, I am genuinely concerned about the mental state of this fellow, Horus, who appears to be living in a clear fantasy world. He speaks of aligning with Somaliland, yet the national airline of the so-called country, Ethiopia, couldn't hold out against the Somali Federal Government for more than 48 hours—the deadline was set for tomorrow, but they conceded today. This clearly demonstrates that the Ethiopian state is on precarious footing. Horus even speaks of fighting Egypt over the Nile and controlling the Red Sea, yet he cannot even manage this relatively minor issue of flights. Somalia should now apply more pressure and make additional demands, as it seems likely that Ethiopia will concede further.
