The Eritrean people's response was however.... first of all, as far as we Eritreans are concerned, you people of Tigray are Ethiopians, and the name of your organization, Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), is not only misguided, it is extremely dangerous. You were not forced to become Ethiopians, it is who you are, therefore your quest to secede from Ethiopia has no historical basis whatsoever. So we urge you to think rationally, logically and objectively.

After the delegation returned to Tigray and delivered the bad news to the TPLF leaders waiting anxiously in the Dedebit jungle, an angry Meles Zenawi stayed up all night writing the now-infamous TPLF's 1976 Manifesto that makes bold territorial claims over large swaths of Eritrean and Amhara lands, seeking to incorporate these territories to Tigray and create their "ታላቋ ትግራይ ሪፑብሊክ", and "the spiritual center of the world"
