Dereje Jada Hawas with General Sebhat Ephrem

On General Sibhat Ephrem bravery!

By: Dereje Jada Hawas, Ethiopian Journalist

https://www.facebook.com/dhawaz/posts/10157115605741995

4 years ago

Hearing General Sibhat Ephrem sustaining injuries from assassination attempt, provoked many of my suppressed memories and wanted to say something.

For those of you who love to talk about armed struggle for liberation, commanding rebel army or something fancy like that, let me offer you some context by introducing you to General Sibhat Ephrem.

As you might recall, Sibhat was Eritrea’s defence minister after the independence and still serves as cabinet minister of the country.

But my personal knowledge of Sibhat came when the battle and desert tested fighters of the 2nd revolutionary army of the eighties that I belonged to fought EPLF’s tough as nail fighters, who were determined to liberate their country no matter what hell was raining from anywhere.

I hear some people mistakenly refer to the style of EPLF’s freedom fighters, as a guerrilla fight (which was far from the reality). The EPLF fought with mechanized and infantry military units, lining up tanks and artilleries with complete conventional warfare where dynamically changing boundaries made with fortified bankers across Eritrea’s Sahel desert with impenetrable bankers and trenches with modern hospitals complete with surgical capabilities built several meters deep under ground.

Sibhat Ephrem, was the commander of EPLF’s fighting force that defended its cause and eventually won libation against an equally ferocious army that is almost half a million strong and armed with 10 billion USD worth of armaments that came from the WARSOW pact countries with the Soviet Union and East Germany at the top.

Remember, ferocious fighters with modern war machine that rains hell from the sea, land and air (only a few places in the world experience a combination of 3 forces participating in battles)

To describe the pressure and difficulties a commander like Sibhat Ephrem was up against, is simply an impossible effort!

In one of Ethiopia’s most significant military campaigns ever, also known as the Red Star Campaign “የቀይ ኮከብ ዘመቻ” (ወረራ ሽድሽተ), the most brilliant military generals Africa ever produced from Ethiopia’s side and some of the most respected military generals and filed marshals the world came to know from the Soviet Union (generals who won the “glorious” World WAR II against Nazi Germany participated in the planing and execution of the red star campaign. Among the contributions of the bad misfortunes that bankrupted that huge campaign was the brilliance of Sibhat Ephrem’s speciality, the infamous, the disgustingly brilliant Counter Attack, “መልሶ ማጥቃት”.

To put this in prospect, the Red Star campaign , if it was directed against almost all of the sovereign countries in Africa or most countries in the world, it would have succeed to defeat and occupy it.

It was that huge!

I remember, every time military radio operators hack into EPLF’s radio to know Sibhat’s movement so a telegram can be distributed to the nearest Corp or division he is approaching as a warning that he might be planing an attack. Believe me it is the most depressing news to hear, because there is almost no defence fortifications or method you might use to defend a post that Sibhat cannot break into.

As a soldier who served across from those trenches in Naqfa, Algena, Kerkebet, Baarentu, Tesenay and many other fronts, the one name that stroke a fear and challenged confidence of any brave soldier was Sibhat Ephrem. Remember, a fear of a soldier is not death but defeat of the cause.

During my trip to Asmara in March 2017 with Geresu Tufa to interview president Isaias Afwerki for OMN, I had a pleasure and honor to spend some time with Sibhat in his office and out in the city. Believe me, he remembers every little details I completely forgot about or chose to forget. Every little battle my unit engaged in, was fresh in his memory.

There is a photo in his office that he took in Algena at the bottom of the infamous Katar mountain’s gorge that leads to Adobha where we lost many of our ሰንጥቅ ሜካናይዝድ tanks in anti tank mine filled sand during the second most bloodshed military campaign, also known as the Red Sea campaign (ዘመቻ ቀይ ባህር) (ወረራ ሸብአተ).

General Sibhat has a fresh memory in such a detail about all battles my unit fought at that dreadful campaign, again that I fought to block from my memory. It was then, that he promised me one day we would go down to Naqfa together and visit that place with him (which I still think about taking some of my surviving buddies to memory lane, before diabetes wipe us out)

It is sad that Ethiopia glorified the likes of TPLF’s generals such as Hayelom Arayaa, Samora Yenus and others who as that time wouldn’t be amounted to be seen as successful goat-herders let alone warriors in front of true soldiers like Sibhat Ephrem, Petros Solomon, Ragasa Jima, Demise Bulto and others.

These TPLF generals would have never defended anything for more than 5 minutes if they had to face a quarter of the army that Sibhat Ephrem fought day in and day out, for many many years.

REMEMBER, REMEMBER AGAIN!

TPLF came to Finfine because Sibhat defeated Durg in Afabet!!!!

I know the Meles doctrine omitted that fact to glorify TPLF & to rewrite history with lies so it can rule that country around for 27 years under assumed strength, that has never really existed. The exhibit is, of course, in its crumble from power.

Nothing, but a puff cloud!

I hear a report, about injuries Genral Sibhat experienced from possible assassination attempt. It is not my place to meddle in Eritrea's internal matters, but as an admirer of the General from across those trenches and bankers, I wish him a quick recovery.

He was a superman like figure in my young soldier’s heart, while fighting him with hate to deny him of any victory.

For today’s rebel leader wannabes, for opportunity grabbing, lottery wining rebel leaders of TPLF who lived with false glory and all other modern and antique characters who took the title “liberation leader” in a dozen for a dime, I say, the standard to achieve freedom with outright wining has a higher bar. I say that, without denying some as getting it failling on their laps (if they know what to do with it).

In another observation:

I am wondering, if this assassination attempt also changes the culture of Eritrean government officials’ interactions with their people. It is one of the most fascinating thing I observed, during my visit there. The simplicity of the officials, almost never exists anywhere.

General Sibhat, drives a 1980 model Toyota Corolla with no driver or a single security. He drove Geresu and I throughout Asmara with no security and every place he stoped his car, ordinary people came and ask him to roll down his car window to fondly touch his hair and calling him by his first name.

It would be sad if this culture changed, because of this event.

Press Release: Eritrea’s stance on the Security of the Red Sea

https://shabait.com/2019/09/23/press-release-84/

Aug 24, 2020

The geostrategic importance of the Red Sea is too palpable to merit extended elaboration. Global and regional developments in the past decades and current trends further accentuate the full ramifications of its importance.

In this context, the littoral Red Sea States have a vital and indispensable role in securing and promoting enduring and sustainable stability of this crucial international maritime route.

This vial task will require establishment and consolidation of an appropriate architecture of effective collective security that is predicated on a clear strategy and coherent plans of action. It will also require time, political good will, as well as the marshaling of requisite resources.

Various efforts launched in the past – including the joint military drill launched this weekend in Jeddah by several Red Sea countries – are all aimed towards advancing this lofty objective.

Eritrea’s commitment towards this common objective is clear as it was indeed fully expounded in its Statement at the Meeting of High-Level Officials of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden that was convened in Riyadh in April (21-22) this year.

The 12-point key parameters on cardinal procedures and substantive issues outlined in Eritrea’s Statement are:

1. Comprehensive and unbiased assessment of the current realities of the Red Sea and associated matters, in all their dimensions and perspectives in a realistic manner;
2. Full clarity on the desired objectives and goals;
3. Detailed mapping of the threats to the peace and security of the Red Sea; and, categorization and specification of these parameters;
4. Formulation of a viable strategy that will ensure achievement of constructive objectives and goals;
5. Formulation of strategies to contain and eliminate the threats in tandem with the positive policies of cooperation;
6. Mapping out detailed schemes and plans that will ensure holistic implementation of the twin strategies;
7. Stipulation of the implementation mechanisms, associated structures and mobilization of the requisite resources;
8. Ensuring that all the organizational configurations and frameworks that are developed are anchored on respect of sovereignty and international law;
9. Ensuring that all littoral States build and possess their own effective defense capabilities and naval forces (without delegation to others);
10. Supplementing, through collective efforts and synergy, those specific tasks that cannot be met through individual domestic capabilities and resources;
11. All relevant States will create appropriate modalities of cooperation with “external forces” for tasks or missions that are beyond their collective capability on the basis of a consensual framework;
12. Creation of competent committees to address all these issues in a comprehensive and professional manner.

Danakali sells stake in flagship Colluli potash project in Eritrea

Australia’s Danakali (ASX: DNK) has completed the sale of its 50% stake https://cdn-api.markitdigital.com/apima ... a206a39ff4 in the Colluli potash project in Eritrea, Africa, 13 years after partnering with the Eritrean National Mining Corporation (ENAMCO) to build the mine.

The buyers, Chinese company Sichuan Road and Bridge Group, have paid a first instalment of $105 million. A second tranche payment of $16 million is expected within the next six months, Danakali said.

The Colluli potash project is considered one of the world’s most significant and lowest-cost sources of sulphate of potash (SOP), https://www.mining.com/danakali-to-sell ... n-eritrea/ a premium grade fertilizer.

The project has the world’s largest JORC compliant reserve at 1.1 billion tonnes. It also contains other fertilizer products, such as muriate of potash (MOP) and gypsum, along with rock salt.

There is also potential for kieserite and mag chloride to be commercialized with minimal further processing required.

A United Nations report published in 2019 https://www.mining.com/danakalis-potash ... ritrea-un/ suggested that Colluli could significantly boost the economy of Eritrea.

The project is the only known source of potash that allows extraction of the fertilizer in solid form. It also has access to solar, wind and geothermal energy systems – the East African rift.

The operating environment weighed heavily on Danakali’s decision, as Eritrea is ruled by one of the world’s most oppressive regimes https://www.hrw.org/africa/eritrea and was until 2018 on the UN’s sanctions list.

[Mining.Com, Stop the misinformation!

The reason Denkali sold its interest to the Chinese is the difficulty they had in raising the necessary capital, because of the West making it hard to do business in Eritrea. Ask the executives, they will tell you the reasons.

On March 31, 1994 AMB Jang Hak Su of North Korea presented his credentials to President Isaias Afwerki, as the first Ambassador of his country.

During the Armed Struggle for the Independence, North Korea supported Ethiopia militarily. Beginning in 1985 North Korea deployed hundreds of military advisers to Ethiopia and provided small arms, ammunition and other materials, helped build 2 military equipment factories. North Korea also paid for the training of a 20,000-man special operations force, at the Tatek military camp.

In November 1985, North Korea provided Ethiopia interest-free loan to be used to purchase equipment with which to construct a shipyard on Haleb Island; 70km off Assab. The shipyard, was to produce wooden-hulled and steel hulled craft.

In May 2011, NATO Naval forces allegedly captured a heavy weapons carrying cargo ship destined to Eritrea in the international waters of the Indian Ocean; while in 2007, the US allowed Ethiopia to complete a secret arms purchase from North Korea despite a UNSC sanctions Resolution on the country.

During this period, the dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia was unresolved due to Ethiopia's/TPLF refusal to honor International Arbitration Awards.

ARTICLES
If the people knew, they would be furious.”

7 hours ago

Written By: Frehiwet Daniel. Translated By: Raey Berhane

https://eriyouth.org/2023/04/if-the-peo ... e-furious/

From the book, “USA: The 100 worst quotes

Every Thursday, NUEYS invites professionals from various fields to come and give seminars on different topics. On the 2nd of March, 2023 Ambassador Hana Simon was invited to give a lecture on the topic, “USA: The 100 worst quotes.”

Ambassador Hana had recently translated a book written by Belgian writer and political analyst Michel Colon called: “USA: LES 100 PIRES CITATIONS”, into Tigrinya. The title of the book is “ሕ.መ.ኣ: ሕቡአ ጉዶም ኣብ ልሳኖም”, translated into Tigrinya.

This book describes different events, that expose the true nature of the USA’s greedy foreign policy. The book provides statements beginning from the 1940s that were said by American leaders (Presidents, Ambassadors, Ministers, Advisers, influential individuals, etc.)

Throughout the decades that describe the exact essence of US foreign Policy, through 100 quotes. Each quote has the year this quote was said, three informative points, the name and authority of the person that said the quote, the quote itself, and an analysis from the author about the quote.

After the analysis of some of the quotes, Ambassador Hana went on to describe the aim of writing this book. She said the main objective of this book when it was being translated from French to Tigrinya was to make sure that,
Every single educated or uneducated/ inexperienced or experienced person(s), Should all understand the true face of US foreign policy if we are going to work together to fight against it.
While translating, she also gave her own explanations on potentially unclear phrases or words that were used in the original version of the book. The Ambassador also gave the audience ten essentials of US foreign policy, that the she thought needed to be understood when reading the book.

1. One of its main purposes is to work for the profit of international corporations.
2. There are no such things as friends.
3. True Democracy is a danger to them.
4. Must have strategic dominance over important resources (such as oil and gas.)
5. Direct warfare as a tool.
6. Indirect warfare and strategic chaos also as a tool.
7. Overthrowing of Governments.
8. Law and Human rights are irrelevant; we are allowed to do whatever we want.
9. Sowing destruction using CIA and other nongovernmental organizations.
10. Informational warfare/the Art of Confusion

In her next analyses, she went on to ask questions she thought the audience should think about when reading this book. Who has the highest authority to enact these political decisions:

Is it the President? What about the extremely influential experts in strategy, they have at their side?

In the aim of destroying the US’s competitors, they go to the third world and create unrest and chaos in nations that were once prosperous. They create, and are still creating, strategies to get rid of influential people who can make/ are making a difference. But to what extent, if any, are they held responsible.

What about their Military and CIA?

Another part of the power, is held in the hands of the US military and the CIA. While politicians are changed every few years, the leaders of the Military and CIA stay in power for more extended periods. So, they have more time to enact their desires and visions.

What about Congress?

Members of Congress are chosen by the people, to represent the people that are voting for them in congress. So, aren’t they technically the enactors of the will of the people.

Once everything has been analyzed, it begs the question: where does the power really lie? Is there a form, that has slightly more power than the other? Some even begin to create conspiracies that there’s some secret society in control, but there is no need to start jumping to such extremes. Though this does not mean we cannot make realistic suggestions, the best assumption is that power or control of the US government and its foreign policy lies in the hands of the ones who have the most money. Big international corporations are extremely influential; they provide the most financial resource. Therefore, they are the ones who get to do or control whatever they please.

What is the reason, the mainstream media don’t talk about the US’s greedy and selfish foreign policy? They only provide us with public announcements, from Washington. But if you want the truthful information you must look behind the scenes of what they say for example, how Wikileaks exposed Information about the US, this is a big step in the right direction to understanding. The most distressing fact, is that this all won’t matter if the people don’t fully understand the facts that are being presented to them.

As a reader, after taking in the information from this book, there are two initial reactions that usually are seen in a reader. One is thinking,
they (the US) are too strong
which is a defeated mindset.

The other is thinking,
we can win in this informational war
which is a proactive and moral boosting mindset.

The Ambassador Hanna later expressed,
I have tried my best to provide a tool for all to learn about the behavior of the US.
She also described how, because the US has an enormous influence on the world, we must fully understand everything we need to know about the topic. We must do our part in trying to provide a solution for the situation together, only then can we find a clear direction out of this messy path.

The aim of this book is not to destroy someone’s hopes of a better world, but to provide the necessary enlightenment for one in order so that they can understand who they are up against. I once again hope, that anyone reading this book doesn’t think they should be against America. The aim of this book is not to make some become against the nation and people of the USA, but against the few people and the policies who are leading the country on the wrong path.

Ambassador Hana also thanked everyone who helped in the process of publishing this book, and to the people who helped spread the word about the creation of this book. She also stressed, the need for youth to read this book and fully understand what it means. Finally, Ambassador Hana received questions and comments from the audience who were present on the day of the seminar.
