Hamelmalo College of Agriculture graduates 349 students

Keren, 17 July 2022- In its 15th commencement, Hamelmalo College of Agriculture graduated 349 students in first degree and diploma in 8 fields of studies.

At the graduation ceremony held virtually today, 17 July, the college graduated 168 students in first degree and 181 students in diploma in Animal Science, Plant Science, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering, Soil and Water Conservation and in other fields of study.



Speaking at the occasion, Prof. Woldeamlak Araya, Dean of the College congratulated the students for successfully completing their studies and overcoming the challenges COVID-19 caused.

Indicating that education and human resources development is significantly important in the effort to develop the traditional way of farming and livestock breeding into a modern one, Prof. Woldeamlak said that the college is earnestly working to that effect.



Regarding the effort to develop the capacity of lecturers, Prof. Woldeamlak said that currently 23 teachers of the college are in China, Hungary, Russia, and Japan for their PhD and Masters studies and 8 teachers are set to go to Russia, Hungary and Kenya for PhD and Masters studies.



Hamelmalo College of Agriculture since its establishment in 2005 has graduated 2 thousand 500 students in first degree, 2 thousand 839 in Diploma, and 59 in Masters Program.

Some unique points about the recently established Aviation College in are that all instructors are locals (with many years of experience) and that all students and trainees pass through the program for free.

The instructors at the Aviation College have years of international and domestic experience, with training/background for a variety of aircraft.

The UN Country Team, led by the RC a.i James Wakiaga has this morning joined H.E. P. M. Kumsha, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of South Africa in Asmara, for a tree planting exercise in celebration of #MandelaDay.



The meeting was also graced by the Minister of Land Water & Environment, Minister of Justice, Minister of Tourism & senior Government officials of the State of Eritrea.




Others present in the tree planting exercise included the Ambassador of India to Eritrea H.E Subhash Chand, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Eritrea H.E Cai Ge & Russian Ambassador to Eritrea H.E Igor N. Mozgo and senior diplomatic officials from the embassies of Japan, France, United Kingdom and Germany in Eritrea as well as Heads of Agencies and Representatives of OCHA, WHO, FAO, UNDP and WFP.

In His remarks, Amb. Kumsha reiterated the importance of the tree planting exercise in contribution of climate change mitigation measures, noting that this was an opportunity to extend a hand of solidarity for mankind.


While thanking the South African embassy for organizing the event, RC ai noted that the Mandela Day is commemorated globally as a day of making a difference to communities, adding that the exercise would contribute to supporting the nationwide drive of tree planting agenda.

A pilot project completed not long ago by the Ministry of Agriculture to cultivate potatoes in the lowlands for household consumption during the cold season demonstrated encouraging results. More work and scale-up offers great potential moving forward. #SDGs

Eritrean Festival in Holland was held in Dutch city of Rasvaik, on 15 & 16 July. Seminar on current regional trends & Eritrea's integrated national development programmes delivered by Amb. Mohamed S. Mantay, Governor of Southern Red Sea Region. Event featured, variety of cultural shows.

This is the first time for Eritrea to achieve such a position at world championship, on the Women’s category. Nazreth came from 23rd in Doha in 2019 & now, 4th. A major improvement! In April 2022 she won the Daegu Marathon with CR, NR & PB 2:21:56. Today, she broke the National Record and her personal best by a minute and half- at 2:20:29.
