As for your claim no democrat could win an election without the black votes you are exaggerating. Blacks constitute around 12 percent of the population. In some US county , even state, they constitute not more than two percent. Take the state of Hawaii. The black population is less than two percent. But Hawaii as far as I know vote democratic US senators almost always.
Yes, in competitive race the black votes tilt the scale in favor of democrats. That however is not always the case.
The population of the state of Vermont is nearly 100 percent white. The senior US senator who had been in the senate for several decades from Vermont however is a democrat.
