ADDIS ABABA, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Ethiopia's Tigray region has banned flights from its airspace, after the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered a military response against the region, it said on a statement broadcast on television.

The region also said that the Northern Command of the federal military, which is stationed in the region, had defected to its side. There was no immediate comment from the federal military on the claim. (Reporting by Dawit Endeshaw; Writing by Duncan Miriri; Editing by Muralikumar Anantharaman)

Im hearing Northern Command and its entire military arsenal under total control of the Tigray government. Not clear if TPLF intends to deploy it in the ongoing armed confrontation but certainly not available for use to Abiy.

Note: The Northern Command of the Ethiopian Defense is standing with the people of Tigrai and will fight the illegal group in Addis led by Abiy Ahmed. The Northern Command has called on all other Commands in the country to join its effort.
