I give one minor example to illustrate how:
a) - how there is a direct & functional correlation between the feudal-slave system of Ethiopia & the battle of Adwa &,
b) - how, in fact, the main reason - the raison de eter - of the battle of Adwa was to defend or protect this same feudal slave system from ferenjis who threatened it.
As you might've heard, many of Menelik's ravaging wars of conquest that rendered previously sovereign kingdoms of southern Ethiopia was completed in the same decade that the battle of Adwa was fought (1890s). One of the most brutal, bloodiest & protracted wars on southern tribes was the one waged against the Wolamo/Wolaita people & kingdom.
After a series of defeats (at least 6) sustained at the hands of the most heroic & formidable Wolaita warriors, Menelik's forces finally managed to defeat the indomitable Wolaita people.
As a revenge, Menelik2 ordered the taking of a large percentage of the people of Wolaita as slaves & the confiscation of the entire resources of the Wolaita as a war booty. These resources included: food grains, cattle, horses, mules, donkeys, sheep+goats, jewellery &, of course, the Wolaita people as CHATTEL SLAVES (men, women, children!) to be driven to Shoa & Addis Ababa along the cattle, donkeys, etc, also taken from the Wolaita people.
Menelik's order also indicated that Woialta slaves had to carry the bulk of the booty grains & other resources on their backs, heads & shoulders to trott along side the donkeys & mules that transported the looted resources to Shoa! .. Many of the Wolaita slaves were sold in Ethiopia's internal slave markets while most of the younger slaves (girls & boys) were exported to Arab slave markets via the ports of Tadjura & Obok (Djibouti). It was the hard-cash in silver that was earnt from slave exports that funded the importation of guns & ammunition used by Menelik's soldiers at the battle of Adwa & in other wars!!
Out of hundreds of thousands of Wolaita slaves transported to Shoa, thousands were forced to join the 20, 000+ slaves from southern tribes recruited by Menelik's officials to carry the food rations of soldiers all the way from Shoa to Adwa!
