The Catholic Church supported early European colonization through papal decrees, tied conversion efforts to military conquests, and recently repudiated the justifications used against Indigenous peoples.
Papal Decrees and the Doctrine of DiscoveryPapal Bulls: 15th-century decrees like Dum Diversas (1452) and Inter Caetera (1493) gave Catholic nations like Spain and Portugal the right to claim non-Christian lands.Justification: These documents were later used to build the legal "Doctrine of Discovery," which rationalized taking native lands and suppressing local cultures.Vatican Repudiation: In March 2023, the Vatican formally rejected the Doctrine of Discovery, stating that those historical decrees did not reflect the equal rights of Indigenous peoples and were not official Catholic teachings.
Missions and Conquest Hand-in-Hand Expansion: Exploration, colonization, and Catholic missionary work by orders like the Jesuits, Franciscans, and Dominicans moved forward together in the Americas and Asia.Internal Conflict: While some clergy cooperated with colonial states, others protested the abuse and enslavement of native populations, prompting protective papal statements like Pope Paul III’s 1537 decree.Recent
Apologies: Modern popes, including Pope Francis during his 2022 visit to Canada, have apologized for the Church's historical role in colonial abuses and residential school systems.

I hear you. In the name of christianity a lot of evil activities took place in the world and still are taking place which are contrary to the Gospel of Jesus.
But why do you exempt the atrocities of Islam on Africa including arab slavery and Geagn destruction of Ethiopia just to make you look a just person and an advocate right for all?
Remember the christian Ethiopians executed in a way worse than animal in abattoir? Cut their head from behind-a painful death! And Saudi killed 17 Ethiopians recently for minor offenses to make their God happy?
Although you raise good point in many of your posts pertaining to armadilos, you appear squinted on this!
Just to be rational being!

Catholic Bishop Urges Urgent International Intervention to Stop Execution of 200 Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia

By Sabrine Amboka
Addis Ababa, 06 May, 2026 / 11:46 pm (ACI Africa).
Bishop Tesfaselassie Medhin of the Catholic Eparchy of Adigrat in Ethiopia has appealed to the international community to urgently intervene and halt the planned execution of 200 Ethiopian nationals reportedly facing the death penalty in Saudi Arabia.
In a report published Tuesday, May 5, by the information service of the Dicastery for Evangelization, Agenzia Fides, Bishop Medhin called for immediate diplomatic engagement with Saudi authorities and urged the promotion of alternatives to capital punishment that uphold human dignity and the possibility of rehabilitation.
“The cry of the poor and the marginalized must reach the ears of the international community. We cannot remain silent while the lives of so many hang in the balance,”
he said.
Bishop Medhin added, “We earnestly petition your esteemed organizations to engage in urgent, high-level dialogue with the authorities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to seek a stay of execution and a commutation of these death sentences.”
According to reports, more than 200 Ethiopian youths detained in Saudi Arabia have been handed mass death sentences over alleged drug-related offences. The detainees are reportedly being held at Khamis Mushait Prison in the Asir region, according to Eastleigh Voice.
Speaking in his capacity as shepherd of the Adigrat Eparchy, Bishop Medhin underscored the sacred dignity of every human life and cautioned against reducing the detainees to statistics.
“These 200 Ethiopians are not merely a number; they are children, parents, and siblings. Their lives have intrinsic worth that transcends any transgression,” he said.
The Ethiopian Catholic Bishop also called for guarantees of due legal process for the detainees, including access to legal representation and a proper understanding of the charges brought against them.
He urged the international community to “ensure that each of these individuals has been afforded the fullness of due process, including adequate legal representation and an understanding of the proceedings against them.”
Bishop Medhin further advocated for justice systems that prioritize rehabilitation and repentance over execution.
