Emperor Zara Yaqob (r. 1434–1468) instituted sweeping religious reforms in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. His institutionalization of the Tabot (Ark of the Covenant replicas) and the two-day Sabbath (Senbet) faced fierce opposition from traditional monks and clerics.
Opponents and later critics within and outside the Orthodox tradition raised several major arguments regarding these changes:
1. The Elevation of the Tabot and the Charge of Polytheism/Judaizing
Zara Yaqob is credited with formally codifying the veneration of the Tabot, requiring every church to possess a consecrated altar tablet representing the Ark of the Covenant.
* Monastic critics—and later, 17th-century philosophers viewed this as a "Judaizing" of the Christian faith. Traditionalists argued that elevating physical, carved wooden tablets as vessels of divine presence distracted from the New Testament focus on the spiritual Christ.
* The "Polytheism" Argument: By revering localized Tabots dedicated to different saints (e.g., St. Michael, St. Mary), the church inadvertently promoted a polytheistic worldview. Critics claimed this reduced the one, true God into fragmented, localized physical objects reminiscent of pagan or Old Testament tribal relics, violating the Christocentric foundation of the New Testament.
2. The Two-Day Sabbath (Senbet)
Before Zara Yaqob’s reign, the Ethiopian Church was bitterly divided over Sabbath observance. Southern Christians and the Alexandrian Patriarchate observed only Sunday, while Northern followers of St. Ewostatewos observed both Saturday and Sunday. Zara Yaqob unilaterally decreed the two-day Sabbath as mandatory for the entire empire.
* Monks at the influential monastery of Debre Libanos strongly opposed the decree. They criticized it as an unnecessary return to Old Testament legalism, arguing that the New Testament fulfilled the Sabbath and that making Christians rest on Saturday (the Jewish Sabbath) compromised the grace of Sunday.
* Despotism: Beyond the theology, clergy resented that the Emperor was forcing this change by imperial decree without a consensus from an ecumenical council.
3. Devotion to the Virgin Mary
Zara Yaqob intensely promoted the veneration of St. Mary, instituting numerous feast days dedicated to her.
* Traditionalists felt that elevating Marian feast days to the point where they overshadowed the regular liturgical calendar degraded the spiritual importance of regular Christian living. Monks complained that these forced external devotions were merely superficial.
4. Authoritarian Enforcement
Zara Yaqob's reforms were enforced with extreme severity. Those who opposed his theological changes, continued older esoteric practices (Tebab), or were accused of maintaining pagan customs were severely punished or executed. Opponents argued that because he enforced these practices through state terror and fear, it forced outward conformity rather than genuine Christian conversion.
Re: How the amhara debtera king Zara-Yaqob made Amhara orthodox church a religion of polytheism!
In the times where ZeraYacob lived. Europe was burning scientists and great minds who said the earth is not flat and it rotates around the sun. So your Listro mind should compare 14th century Amhara to 14th century Europe, not 14th century Amhara to 20th century world.
You talking about a bright and powerful Amhara king who lived in 14th century who made Debre Berhane his capital. So you learn one thing in addition here to who emperor Zera Yacob is i.e the founder of Debre Birhan
The listros in the 14th century were living on a tree. Let alone 14th century, Listro Gurage Monkeys in the dorm of 19th century were dwelling on trees.
Amharas in 14th century had religious institution, monastic tradition, court and state apparatus evidenced by what you wrote. By including you and adding you to our civilization, we degraded our potential to refine ourselves more and create a more advanced civilization.
Zerayacob is a great mind and very decisive person with great legacy. Eat your heart out and see how Zera Ycob monument is placed right in the center of Debre Birhan City.

The qoma"tas can swim in their own sewage, but the rest of the ethnics should move forward draining all the sewer on their side.
Back to truth and change. Civilization and progress. The Q0mate culture is not a progressive one. It is fossilized in 18th century.

Listro Segeraw Gurage,
We all know Listro Gurage has zero civilization. It never built one. It never created cities, heritages, monarchy, institutions, army....nothing, nada, zilch. Yet, the listro has the dirty mouth to talk trash on those who built and erected state and civilization. Let me assert this once again. We amharas found you naked jumping from tree to tree in that foresaken tiny Gurage enclave. If we haven't found you, you would have been like a tourist destination like the Mursi and Hamer. You are lucky you are in southern Shoa, a land that is proximate to our empire and you were found to be lifted from the d!tch. Gurage is [deleted], the food smells like [deleted]. If you had one civilization or a figure to be proud of, at least we would have given you the credit.
Now, bow down to our 14th century emperor. we know you fear him check him from a different angle

Brother Misraq,
Hit the Zebergas hard, and withdraw to let them talk angrily to themselves all day.
The Zebergas are convinced that they have the Oromos in their bag. They are acting foolishly as if there is no tomorrow. Because their head size is small to think otherwise.
Debating on merit and facts about great Ethiopians and the founders of Ethiopia with small mind Gurages is not worth your time.
As Sir Thomas said, why talk to the Guraghies, by all accounts, haven’t finished their human evolution.
Amhara made them and they have no life without Amhara. The moment they reach age 10, all they want to do is migrate to Addis to be where the Amharas are. That is the history of stinky Gurages. Polishing shoes, slaughtering goats and of course stealing- all that possiblity is created for them by the Amharas.
