The Amhara and Gurage ethnic groups emerged around the same historical era because their origins are deeply intertwined through the southward expansion of the ancient Aksumite Empire.

1. Linguistic and Ethnic Emergence (Tie)
Both the Amhara and Gurage speak Ethio-Semitic languages (Amharic and the Gurage language cluster), which evolved from the ancient language of Ge'ez.
The Common Origin: Between the 4th and 9th centuries AD, the northern-based Aksumite Empire began expanding south into the central and southern highlands of modern-day Ethiopia.
The Split: As Aksumite military colonies and settlers mixed with different indigenous Cushitic-speaking groups (such as the Agaw in the north and the Sidama in the south), distinct new ethnic identities began to form.
The settlers who mixed with the northern Agaw became the Amhara.
The settlers who pushed further south and mixed with local southern groups became the Gurage.

2. Geographical Settlement (Gurage Lands vs. Amhara Lands)
If you are asking who inhabited their current, specific geographic homelands first, the breakdown looks like this:

The Gurage: Early Southern Settlers
The Homeland: The Gurage region (south-central Ethiopia) has been home to the Gurage people for over a millennium.
Early Settlement: Historical and linguistic evidence suggests that Aksumite military expeditions established permanent colonies in the Gurage hills around the 6th to 9th centuries AD.
Isolation: When the Aksumite Empire collapsed, these southern military detachments were cut off from the north. They settled permanently, adapted to the local environment, adopted the cultivation of the Ensete (false banana) plant, and formed the unique Gurage culture.

The Amhara: Later Southern Expansion

The Homeland: The Amhara identity originally solidified in the north-central highlands (regions like historical Bete Amhara, Wollo, and Begemder).
Southward Migration: While individual Christian military outposts existed early on, mass Amhara settlement in the southern and south-central regions of Ethiopia occurred much later. Medieval and 19th Century Waves: As documented by medieval historians like Al-Maqrizi, Amhara populations settled further south following the 15th-century religious wars. A much larger wave of Amhara administrative and military settlement occurred in the late 19th century during the expansion of the modern Ethiopian state under Emperor Menelik II.

Ethiopians need to know the true history of the region adn the made up stories of the region. Ethiopians need to learn that Ethnics are more than the slur name called by the illiterate chauvnists. That Gurage in fact has one of the richest history than the hateres want to hear and bigger than them or at least not represented by the name they want to call it. Gurage is one of the most ancient ethnics in Ethiopia with roots going back to, who knows one of ancient civilizaions, not really Axum but beyond.
