Emperor Zara Yaqob (r. 1434–1468) instituted sweeping religious reforms in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. His institutionalization of the Tabot (Ark of the Covenant replicas) and the two-day Sabbath (Senbet) faced fierce opposition from traditional monks and clerics.
Opponents and later critics within and outside the Orthodox tradition raised several major arguments regarding these changes:

1. The Elevation of the Tabot and the Charge of Polytheism/Judaizing
Zara Yaqob is credited with formally codifying the veneration of the Tabot, requiring every church to possess a consecrated altar tablet representing the Ark of the Covenant.
* Monastic critics—and later, 17th-century philosophers viewed this as a "Judaizing" of the Christian faith. Traditionalists argued that elevating physical, carved wooden tablets as vessels of divine presence distracted from the New Testament focus on the spiritual Christ.
* The "Polytheism" Argument: By revering localized Tabots dedicated to different saints (e.g., St. Michael, St. Mary), the church inadvertently promoted a polytheistic worldview. Critics claimed this reduced the one, true God into fragmented, localized physical objects reminiscent of pagan or Old Testament tribal relics, violating the Christocentric foundation of the New Testament.

2. The Two-Day Sabbath (Senbet)
Before Zara Yaqob’s reign, the Ethiopian Church was bitterly divided over Sabbath observance. Southern Christians and the Alexandrian Patriarchate observed only Sunday, while Northern followers of St. Ewostatewos observed both Saturday and Sunday. Zara Yaqob unilaterally decreed the two-day Sabbath as mandatory for the entire empire.
* Monks at the influential monastery of Debre Libanos strongly opposed the decree. They criticized it as an unnecessary return to Old Testament legalism, arguing that the New Testament fulfilled the Sabbath and that making Christians rest on Saturday (the Jewish Sabbath) compromised the grace of Sunday.
* Despotism: Beyond the theology, clergy resented that the Emperor was forcing this change by imperial decree without a consensus from an ecumenical council.

3. Devotion to the Virgin Mary
Zara Yaqob intensely promoted the veneration of St. Mary, instituting numerous feast days dedicated to her.
* Traditionalists felt that elevating Marian feast days to the point where they overshadowed the regular liturgical calendar degraded the spiritual importance of regular Christian living. Monks complained that these forced external devotions were merely superficial.

4. Authoritarian Enforcement
Zara Yaqob's reforms were enforced with extreme severity. Those who opposed his theological changes, continued older esoteric practices (Tebab), or were accused of maintaining pagan customs were severely punished or executed. Opponents argued that because he enforced these practices through state terror and fear, it forced outward conformity rather than genuine Christian conversion.
