Without Menelick's 500,000 rifles supplied by Italy and France, Ethiopia would not have known Amharic. It's a language imposed by guns.
Without midget Haile's Amara nationalism of the 1960s that made Amharic the language of instruction up to Grade 6 throughout Ethiopia and a compulsary subject to pass in order to join college or university, without EPRD''s legalizingvit as the official language of the EPRDF gov, Amharic without being foribly imposed on the people, Amharic that had not come to Ethiopians with value adding goods and services such as the English, French, Italian, Portuguese languages of sciene and technology, Amharic would have remained rejected even to read the bible with it as Shewa peasants of the 1830s tossed it out to dumps. They preferred the Bible written in Geez.
So, it's clear, Amharic is a forced official language. One of a kind in the world. Even in US, English is not legalized official language. When something is written into law, that thing is protected by law as well as enforced by the institutions of the gov. You can be penalized for breaking the law that gave it legal protection. To my knowledge, Amharic is the only language in the world whose official status is protected by law.
This ain't right in a multi-lingual country.
