Dubbed the worst in the world, I am researching the causes of road accidents in Ethiopia,
1. to come out with a policy principle for administrative solutions for safety regime
2. to find engineering solutions to causes of road accidents in Ethiopia.
Folks, we are losing so many lives and properties despite the fact that Ethiopia has mostly flat topography than mountains. No excuse for so many accidents.
Your input is hereby kindly solicited. Selamawit excepted because she sees but she doesn't form sense of what she sees.

Re: Road accidents on Ethiopian roads
Every driver should be required to RESIT for driving and road rules tests.(This may include driving instructors)
Introduce demerit points fines and jail terms.
Disqualify repeat offenders for long terms or ban for life.
Make drink and driving punishable by fines, jail and ban for life.
Make jaywalking and random crossing of roads punishable by FINES.
Remove all cars that aren't ROAD WORTHY off the roads and fine those flouting the law.
Train traffic officers to do professional duty and fire the bad apples.
Get rid of Roundabouts and introduce one-way roads.

Re: Road accidents on Ethiopian roads
Good points Tiago. These administrative measures can drastically decrease road accidents. I would include:
1. Pedestrian bill of rights which informs drivers to yield to pedestrians crossing the road no matter what.
2. Make distracted driving such as using mobile phones while driving a crime
3. Provide bicycle lanes
4. Install traffic signs such speed limits, turn signs, stop signs, yield signs, danger or hazard signs including "fatigue kills, take breaks routinely" signs
5. Lower allowable blood alcohol leverl to international standards. Citizens report suspected drunk driver to police.
6. Install reflectors , if possible lights, on bends
Engineering solutions
1. Build sidewalks on densely populated urban streets
2. Minimize bends...build roads as straight as possible
3. Install barriers to stop vehicles from driving off bends
4. Build rest stops on the side of roads every10 or 15km for example.

Raised priority crossings for pedestrian / put zebra crossing on ramp to slow down motorists.
At the moment all the zebra crossings in AA are for decoration purpose.
Those old and battered blue and white taxis / ውይይት are nothing short of bombs and the best place for them is at the smelter,

Electric green lights on opposite side of the road showing a pedestrian picture with a right to cross the road with a number of seconds to start and finish crossing the road. Otherwise a palm signal indicating to not cross while vehicke traffic flows. Public shall be educated, and especially children at home and in schools.
Raised ramps to slow traffic 6 feet behind pedestrian crossings painted with vivid yellow color.

Re: Road accidents on Ethiopian roads
Install steel gurad rails or build reinforced concrete walls on the lower side of mountainous roads adjacent to valleys to stop out-out-of control vehicle from running and crashing into the valley down.
Last week, two accidents in Gurage and Wello mountains killed 28 and 30 travellers, respectively, when out- of- control vehicles crashed into valleys.
