The claim that Amhara is primarily a 20th and 21st-century construct reflects a highly debated school of thought in modern Ethiopian historiography. While the cultural and linguistic roots of the Amhara run deep, the modern concept of the Amhara as a distinct, monolithic ethnic block emerged through specific political developments.

The narrative is supported by two main arguments:

* Imperial Era (19th & 20th Centuries): Historically, "Amhara" initially referred to a specific geographic region (Bete Amhara, in modern Wollo) and later functioned as a civic or national identity centered on the Abyssinian Empire, Orthodox Christianity, and the Amharic language. Under Emperor Haile Selassie in the 20th century, Amharic was standardized and promoted to unify the diverse regions of the Ethiopian state. Critics and historians argue this process of Amharization sought to centralize power.

* Federal Era (Late 20th & 21st Centuries): The precise "Amhara ethnicity" as it is known today was heavily discursively constructed following the 1974 revolution and the rise of the Marxist regime. During this era, rival ethno-nationalist movements framed the previous imperial state-building projects as "Amhara oppression". When the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) took power in 1991 and established an ethnic-federalist system, the Amhara were officially categorized as a distinct ethnic group, prompting a wave of ethnic nationalism in response to rising political marginalization.
