Ethiopia betrayed Africa at Copenhagen
Going into the 2009 UN climate summit in Copenhagen, 54 African countries got together and drafted a proposal demanding $400 billion to pay for adaptation to the effects of climate change and help countries move toward a green development path – equivalent to one percent of industrialized nations’ GDP.
France pressured leaders of its former colonies in Africa to appoint Ethiopia to lead the climate negotiations. Aid workers said climate change affected some 23 million people in east African nations, with Ethiopia worst affected. This was the rationale used to appoint Ethiopia as a country representing the 54 countries in Africa.
As the rest of Africa awaits a successful outcome of the Climate Conference in Copenhagen, Ethiopia's Meles Zenawi discarded the African proposal and presented one drafted by France, and instead of the continent's initial $400 billion target, Meles asked for $100 billion, and at the end of the day he accepted the $1 billion offered by the industrialized nations and went home.
Many Africans felt they got betrayed by Ethiopia.
