Talking even to an enemy is a good undertaking as far as there is a winning possibility of some kind. USA or western mediated talk between Ethiopia and Eritrea should be OK as far as there is some benefit for Ethiopia. If successful you celebrate your gains. If not, you say the grapes are sour any ways and you walk away like the fox that could not reach the hanging grapes.

Ethipia needs either ownership or a better deal to acquire a port. If this does nto happen, it is going to happen this way or that way in the future whether Shabiya cries or laughs. It is a matter of time. Eritrea has to be bluntly told to stop messing up with Ethiopia in the name of supporting opposition. That should produce a [deleted]-for-tat response if not worked out diplomatically. As far as Eritrea is meddling in Sudan issue, Ethiopia can not keep quite to persue its interests.

We hope, the port issue will be a talking point if the two countries are brought to table. GERD should never be a talking point involving Egypt. Ethiopia with its swelling population can never promise Egypt about the amount of water it will get with changing climate. Opening Ethiopian market to Eritrea, some sort of energy share with Eritrea in return to port deal and red sea access with the joint activity by the two countries are all points of talk that could be raised.

United state should not lift sanctions just for granted. Eritrea has to release all journlists, christian pastors and politicians rotting in priosion. Eritrea should open up to the world for business as well as stop youth rotting in Sawa vis a vis improinng regional peace.

Yes, united states could pressure both countress to do better in many sectors including human right, development of institutions and political space so that peace gets upperhand over violence. USA could help Ethiopia to resolve its internal conflicts and improve its political practices. There alway will be some who won't be happy in this process but good opportunity for Ethiopia to improve its relations with the west specially with USA.

Life is give and take. USA is unlikely to have lifted your sanctions unless you go a certain length in terms of the role you play in the region how you behave with neighboring countries and how you treat your own people(carrot& stick). Also more importantly how much you are willing to execute the assignment given to you by USA.
