Official Wives
Menelik II's marriages were strategic, with the first two ending in divorce:
Altash Tewodros (1864–1865): Daughter of Emperor Tewodros II. This marriage was a political attempt to solidify relations with the ruling emperor. She was of Amhara background.
Bafena Wolde Michael (1865–1882): A noblewoman who was frequently accused of intriguing against Menelik, leading to their divorce. She was of Amhara background.
Taytu Betul (1883–1913): A powerful noblewoman from the northern regions. Their marriage brought significant stability, as she was of imperial blood (descended from the Yejju Oromo and Amhara dynasties) and held immense power, playing a key role in the battle of Adwa.
Concubines and Known Partners
Menelik was reported to have fathered several children by various women before his marriage to Taytu.
Wurgi: Wurgi is identified in some historical accounts as a "concubine" or partner of Menelik, though not often listed as a primary wife. Some accounts describe her as being of Seltie ethnic origin, suggesting a connection to southern/eastern trade routes.
Ejigayehu Lemma Adyamo: Identified in some accounts as a house servant girl or lady-in-waiting, she is identified as the mother of Zewditu, who became Empress in her own right.
Unnamed Mothers: Other children, such as Shoaregga Menelik (mother of Lij Iyasu) and Asfa Wossen Menelik, were born to other relationships (natural children).
