On March 1, 2026, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed spoke on the phone with the Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al Hamad Al-Sabah. He described Iranian aerial attacks as "an atrocious attack and a violation of Kuwait’s sovereignty and international law." The following day, March 2, he called Qatar’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al Hamad Al-Sabah. During this conversation, he expressed "Ethiopia’s confidence in Qatar’s ability to manage the repercussions." Observers at Arat Kilo quickly noted that Abiy’s prompt condemnation was motivated by Ethiopia’s heavy reliance on Gulf remittances and financial support, since millions of Ethiopians live and work in these
countries. What puzzled them, however, was why Abiy Ahmed—who has a close relationship with the UAE’s President, Mohamed bin Zayed (Abiy is a sponsored protege of MBZ’s mother) and whose country receives significant UAE investment—did not include the UAE in his high-profile calls to Gulf States affected by the Iranian air strikes.
Mandarins at Ethiopia’s MoFA see these high-profile calls as a diplomatic shift because they clash with Ethiopia’s earlier efforts to deepen ties with Tehran, including a December 2025
parliamentary visit to Iran. This signalled that Abiy had picked a side in the widening US-Israel-Iran conflict. Both Ethiopia and Iran are members of BRICS. While Abiy denounced the Iranian strikes as atrocious attacks on sovereignty, the founding members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa have largely called the conflict illegal and a violation of the UN Charter.
No sooner had Abiy Ahmed ended his call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on March 11 than he was en route to Abu Dhabi on 12 March 2026. He paused in Djibouti for tripartite talks on regional matters with President Ismail Omar Guelleh and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Djibouti and Somalia respectively. Where Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was once greeted with red carpets, embraces, and cheek kisses from President MBZ, this visit was marked by a conspicuous lack of warmth. This was a striking contrast to the friendship that previously colored their encounters.
Rumours swirl that the Prime Minister’s so-called Diplomatic Hail Mary was a last-minute plea to rescue Ethiopia’s economy and push the UAE and RSF out of the country to satisfy America’s demands. Failure to deliver could spell disaster for his administration's relationship with the International Monetary Fund.
