The below is attributable to Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott:
Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke today with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. The Secretary and Prime Minister discussed their shared commitment to regional stability, counterterrorism cooperation, economic prosperity, and building a foundation for long-term security in the Horn of Africa.
My take on the discussion:
Why did Mr. Rubio call Abiy Ahmed today? Why now? In the context of the war in west Asia, Rubio’s call has to do with urgency. The topics of discussion must have been both important and urgent.
There are some immediately connected events that happened yesterday ….
(1) US designated the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood (Al-Burhan ally) as global terrorist organization. This measure was asked by UAE (RSF ally)
(2) Statement by geopolitical analyst Brandon Weichert - does Ethiopia control a red sea coast? No. But Ethiopia’s security role in the Red sea is directly tied to Ethiopia’s quest for the Red sea
(3) Israel wants to have a Red sea base to fight the Houthis.
(4) Why did Djibouti lower port fees today?
(5) And, there is rumor that Ethiopia and Eritrea are in a negotiation
(6) Probably a RSF and SAF ceasefire?
(7) A definitive statement by Ethiopia general about sea access yesterday
Why are all these things are happening all at the same time?
