Why "Amhara" is the cause of backward Ethiopia, at least partly!

Post by Odie » Yesterday, 17:35

Arguments exist suggesting the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the historically dominant Amhara-centric cultural/political structure contributed to slow modernization by fostering traditionalism, resisting change, and consolidating power, leading to early 20th-century cognitive dissonance between perceived cultural superiority and actual "backwardness".

Key perspectives on this issue include:
Cultural Conservatism: The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, a pillar of traditional life, often prioritized religious continuity over secular modernization, acting as a conservative force in education and societal structure.

Resistance to Change    : The entrenched, often Amhara-centric, feudal-like aristocracy (the neftenya-gabbar system) was sometimes viewed as resisting reforms that might threaten their socio-political dominance, preferring established traditions.

Cognitive Dissonance: Early 20th-century intellectuals, many of whom were Amhara, faced a dilemma: their immense pride in Ethiopia’s unique, unbroken history of independence—often tied to the Orthodox faith and Amhara, royal culture—contrasted sharply with the urgent need for modernization, creating a slow, fragmented approach to reform.
