The conversion of the Kingdom of Aksum to Christianity under King Ezana in the 4th century was a strategic move driven by both political, economic power, and potential religious motives. It solidified trading links with the Roman/Byzantine Empire and provided a unified ideology to manage a diverse, expanding state.

Key Aspects of the Conversion:
Power and Trade Maintenance: King Ezana’s conversion, heavily influenced by Frumentius, allowed Aksum to align with the Roman Empire, their major trading partner. By adopting Christianity, Axum established a political link with the Byzantine Empire, which acted as a protector of Christendom.

Unifying the State: Christianity provided a cohesive, state-sanctioned belief system that helped unify the diverse linguistic and ethnic groups within the Aksumite kingdom.
Symbolic Change: This shift in power is visible in early 4th-century coinage, where Ezana replaced pre-Christian, polytheistic symbols (sun/moon discs) with the Christian cross, signaling a major cultural pivot.

Cultural Legacy: Although primarily a political maneuver, it fostered a unique, enduring Christian identity in Ethiopia.

That is why some conclude EoC was a tool for politicians and oppression to subdue the poor which was and against the initial purpose of the gospel of saving people’s soul and believe in Christ. This abuse of christianity continued as a tool of colonization at later ages and remains a tool for ruling the soul and mind of people than serving spiritual purpose which is wrong.

ሃርቫርድ ረግጬ እግዝኣብሔር ኣለመኖሩን ኣረጋግጫለሁ ያለ ኣህዛብ writes in the 21st century that ኣፄ ኢዛና of the 4th century was very skilled in making strategic political decisions of global magnitude.

The late Professor Donald N. Levine’s disagreement with him is colossal.

Paraphrased, the late Professor wrote that because of the religious preaching that they heard, that they were cursed by THE WILL OF GOD, the ancient Aksumite started a protracted identity struggle ever since.

He wrote that they didn’t want to abandon their priori identity and that they didn’t want to be identified as cursed by THE WILL OF GOD.

Moreover, he observed that it would have been better for them to choose one of it and stick to it instead of remaining in the protracted identity struggle.

Translated, they didn’t want to abandon their Pharaohs heritage while they wished to be known as blessed like the Israelite.

The cursed and blessed preaching of ancient times was lifted by none other than a Jewish author by the name Sigmund Freud more than 80 years ago, by the Ethiopian Renaissance man the Laureate Tsegaye Ghebremedhin more than 50 years ago, and by Professor ቃሎ more than 20 years ago.

Evidently, a Doctor Debretsion Ghebremicael hibernates not very far from Aksum in ignorance that Moses was the Pharaoh par excellence.

The Ethiopian man by the name of Horus who presumably has lived in the U.S. for a long time lectures Ethiopians about his uninformed or misinformed thinking in the 21st century.

Signed by Professor ቃሎ, according to letter of honor written on መስከረም ሚካኤል ቀን፣ 2018፣ ዓም and received on የካቲት ኪዳነምህረት ቀን፣ 2018፣ ዓም።

Addendum to your finding on Axum's colonization by the Eastern Roman Empire also known as the Byzantine Empire, capital Constantatinople.

For three economic motives:

1. Control of the spice and frankincense and myrrh by the Kingdom of Saba, capital Marib.

2. Control of the Red Sea trade route including the choke point Bab el-Mandeb

3. Control of the rich gold resource of the Kush Kingdom, capital Merowe(Sudan) which incorporated Nubia, Belemeys or Bejas of of Suakin(Port Sudan), Gedaref and Ketsela of Sudan

Axum financed, trained and armed with modern weapons by Constantinople invaded the Kush kingdom, genocided the people and burnt Merewe to ashes in 330 A.D. Rome achieved its goal of having access to the Nubian Gold. Christianization also began in earnest in the destroyed kingdom.

Axum also first invaded Saba in 525 AD but failed and tried again in 575 with success occupying it by Gen. Abrha Atsbaha who was defeated by the Persians. This started the decline and disintegration of Axum.
