The Godfather of Eritrean Cycling!
The Legendary of Carmelo Salimbeni: Before the world knew the names of Daniel teklehaimanot, Biniam Girmay and others- there was Carmelo Salimbeni.
A true pioneer, Salimbeni didn’t just race, he built the foundation for what is now Africa’s most successful cycling nation.

A Career of Dominance, 1962–1980. Active for nearly two decades, Salambeni was the king of the road. His stats speak for themselves.
A 5-Time National Champion: He ruled the Eritrean circuit, winning the national title five times through sheer grit and tactical brilliance.
He took Eritrean talent to the global stage, representing the region at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
Salimbeni was known for his incredible endurance and his ability to conquer the steep highlands of Eritrea.
He wasn’t just a rider, he was a student of the sport, mastering the art of the breakaway and high-altitude climbing.

Carmelo’s contribution goes far beyond his medals. He is the bridge between the old era of cycling and the modern-day "Red Sea Camels."
He proved that an Eritrean rider could compete with the world's best.
After his racing days, his passion helped keep the cycling culture alive during difficult times, ensuring that the sport remained the heartbeat of the nation.

Carmelo Salimbeni is more than an athlete; he is a national treasure.
Every time an Eritrean rider stands on a podium in Europe today, they are standing on the shoulders of this giant.
He didn't just ride a bike; he paved the road for a nation.
Kudos, Eritrea! @natzem
