Eritrean Students Claim Top Honor in African Division at SPPU's International Food Festival Pune, in India.
In a vibrant celebration of global cuisine and cultural diversity, two Eritrean Master's students made history by securing first place in the African division at the International Food Festival held at Savitribai Phule, Pune University (SPPU).
Dibab Firemikael, pursuing her studies at the University of Mysore, and Tsega Misghina, a student at SPPU, represented Eritrea for the first time at the event.
The food festival took place on February 3, 2026, as a key highlight of the university's International Youth Festival 2026, organized by SPPU's International Centre under the inspiring theme:
Say No to Drugs and Yes to Life.
The festival drew enthusiastic crowds to the campus, where students from over 25 countries set up stalls showcasing authentic traditional cuisines.
As scholarship students in India, Dibab and Tsega balanced their academic excellence with this proud representation of their homeland. Their victory not only highlights the rich heritage of Eritrean cuisine—known for its bold spices, injera-based dishes, and communal spirit—but also underscores the power of cultural exchange in fostering unity and positive values among international youth.
The event aligned with the festival's broader mission to promote healthy living, cross-cultural understanding, and a drug-free lifestyle through shared experiences in food, sports, and performances.
This milestone brings immense pride to the Eritrean community and celebrates the contributions of international students to campus life, at SPPU. Tsega and Dibab's achievement serves as an inspiring example of how dedication, heritage, and collaboration can shine on an international stage.
Congratulations to Dibab Firemikael and Tsega Misghina—Eritrea's culinary ambassadors who have truly made their country proud! @IndiaEritrea
