(Cairo) On January 9, the Egyptian Air Force launched an attack on a convoy carrying military aid, including armored vehicles, that was on its way to the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan, in the border triangle area between Egypt, Libya and Sudan.

An informed Egyptian official source told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the strike occurred two days before the visit of Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Saddam Haftar to Cairo, where he met with Egyptian Defense Minister Lieutenant General Abdel-Magid Saqr. The source indicated that Cairo had repeatedly warned General Khalifa Haftar against supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) while Egypt supports the Sudanese army and the Sovereignty Council led by General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan.

The same source explained that the Egyptian strike was not the first, as the Egyptian air force had previously carried out an attack on forces belonging to the Rapid Support Forces, which had controlled, for several days last June, the Sudanese side of the border triangle with the support of forces belonging to Haftar.

Friday's strike comes amid a convergence of positions between Egypt and Saudi Arabia on Yemen and the failure of an Emirati-backed attempt to separate southern Yemen after the head of the Southern Transitional Council, Aidarus al-Zubaidi, fled to Abu Dhabi. In this context, the Egyptian source confirmed to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that
there is a convergence of positions between Egypt and Saudi Arabia regarding Yemen and Sudan, with Cairo and Riyadh supporting the official military establishment in Sudan against the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces.
It is worth noting that Saddam Haftar's recent visit to Cairo was his second in about a month. The Egyptian Armed Forces spokesperson stated that Saqr's meeting with Saddam Haftar addressed military cooperation relations, as well as the most prominent developments on the regional and international scenes, and their implications for security and stability in the region.

Saddam Haftar had accompanied his father Khalifa on his visit to Cairo on December 8, where they met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The talks included the shared maritime border and the situation in Sudan.
