Political Spectrum of Oromo Elites in Particular and Ethiopian Elites in General
By Fayyis Oromia*
The current political spectrum in Ethiopia does not align with the capitalist-communist spectrum of the Derg era or the centralist-separatist spectrum of the Woyane period. Instead, it revolves around a pro-Amharic vs. pro-Oromummaa divide. In this context, Ethiopian politicians—particularly Oromo politicians—can be categorized into five distinct groups:
- Oropianists: Seek to establish an Oromo-led geo-federation.
- Amapianists: Advocates for restoring an Amharic-dominated geo-federation.
- Amarpianists: Supporters of maintaining the current status quo of an Amharic-dominated ethnic federation.
- Confepianists: Proponents of creating a confederation of free nations with English as a common language.
- Orompianists: Champions of an Oromo-led ethnic federation.
Accordingly, there are five phases of the Oromo liberation journey; we are currently engaged in the third phase. The first two phases have been completed, while two more remain ahead. The phases are summarized as follows:
- Phase One: The struggle up to 1991, during which we successfully dismantled the unitary Amapia system of President Mengistu Ayana.
- Phase Two: The movement up to 2018, aimed at challenging the federal Amarpia system of Prime Minister Meles Gobana.
- Phase Three (Current): The ongoing struggle to promote Confepia, as envisioned by Daud Ibsaa—a system free from Amharic linguistic domination.
- Phase Four (Near future): The construction of a truly federal Orompia, conceptualized by Lenco Lata, in which Oromic replaces Amharic as the primary working language of the federation .
- Phase Five (Long-term vision): The realization of Oropia, envisioned by Haile Fida—a geo-federation, with Oromic as the lingua franca of the country and region.
