Why does Gurage remain a name-sake ethnic and remain at risk when Ethiopia is defragmented and likely to disintegrate?
The disintegration of Ethiopia while in current state is no more a concept to be afraid of to talk as stable united nation remains more elusive than ever. Regions with less defined unity, say in the nations politics and historically politically marginalized should start scratching their heads and set a plan B in case the possible but feared demise of Ethiopia a country most cherish happens. It is time the southerners and other regions recognize the fact as a dictator with the hegemony of one ethnics is no more a stable union in the 21st century. Democracy and peace has become elusive due to the ethnic politics and violence primarily perpetuated by the Otlromo and Tigrians.
For Gurage, one can ask, can Gurage unify and what is the cause of failure of Gurage unity? What is Gurage plan B if Ethiopia completely fails?
@@@@@@@@
The question of who is responsible for challenges to Gurage unity is a complex and sensitive issue within Ethiopian politics, with different groups holding varied perspectives. The Kistane (Soddo Gurage) people are often cited in these internal debates, with some accusing elements within their elite of obstructing full Gurage unification, while others refute this.
Perspectives on the Gurage Unity Issue
Historical Context: The Gurage people are a diverse ethnic group with several sub-groups, traditionally identified as the Western Gurage (Sebat Bet), the Northern Gurage (Kistane/Soddo), and the Eastern Gurage (Silte-speaking cluster). These groups share cultural elements, but also have distinct linguistic and historical differences.
The Silte Precedent: A major factor was the 2000 referendum in which the Silte people voted to separate from the Gurage Zone to form their own administrative zone, demonstrating that the idea of a single, unified Gurage identity is not universally accepted by all previously classified sub-groups. This event set a precedent for identity-based political movements.
Points of Contention with Kistane:
Some online discussions and political forums contain accusations that certain Kistane elites or individuals have "betrayed" Gurage unity or pursued an "anti-Gurage unity" agenda.
One perspective mentioned is that displaying Kistane as the "proto-Gurage" or "pinnacle of Gurage progress" fails to contribute to unity by potentially alienating other groups.
The Kistane (Soddo) area is geographically adjacent to the Oromia region, leading to complex historical interactions and some intermarriage, which has been cited in identity debates.
Challenges to Unification: The difficulties in forming a unified Gurage administrative unit have been attributed to several factors, including "clannish separatism," a history of being politically unorganized, and disagreements among political elites regarding which linguistic and cultural materials should be prioritized during standardization processes.

Odie,
There is no one as honest and genuine as you among the Gurage - at least on this forum. What is more perplexing is not so much why the Gurage lack a unified mechanism for self-defense against ethnic warfare, unlike the Amhara region, but why Gurage identity and people are being exploited by non-Gurages such as Huresa and Dama for harmful purposes, in the service of Orommuma.
The answer to your inquiry can be examined by looking at why the Gurage, who, according to objective census data, have a population size comparable to that of Tigray, are nevertheless denied recognition as a region (kilil). That, in itself, is deeply perplexing for the Gurage people.
But, as to your fear about the future of Ethiopia , although blood shed is imminent the disintegration of Ethiopia is 100% unlikely. However, Gurage has to man up to stand up against the bully Orommuma relentlessly yawning to swallow the entire ethnic group. Huresa and Dama , for sure, are not Gurage - 100%!

I understand your point. I also share your hope that Ethiopia will not desintegrate. But I am not that naive to place all my coins in that. There are a lot of factors that make me say that. The country has never seen this unprecedented challenge in history before. Not even at the time of Tigray war lords. Look what is going on in the Neighborhood. Sudan gone. Somalia on chopping block. Eritrea pariah state. The only HoA stable country is Kenya.
Ethiopia is in the hands of its classical enemies and thieves like OLF/OPDO with a destructive constitution. Per the incompetents ethnic federalism chaos and war is everywhere. All kinds of criminal activities are going on. There is no guarantee to say Ethiopia won’t break apart. In fact there is a strong risk, per experts, the country can potentially break apart and we are seeing signs and symptoms. The enemy is on the throne. Remember the haters are on the throne. I know Fano is a hope but has to do a lot. First of all unify itself and be a political animal and a unifying force. Not everybody knows how it is working out at this point although their military prowess has never been in question; let us hope for the best that country can be redeemed.
About Gurage, I have said before. It has to be politically active, shake off its part that are Gurage only by word and culture like sodo PP/OPDO aligned elites/parasites in the name of Ethiopia and move for unity than be subjugated to current system. Basically Gurage are house niga at this point. The man in 4 kilo tied their hands and told them to do labor work and business only and they agreed. Sodo is just a small piece of gurage and the way this mentally ill sodo behave on this forum is insane. He tries to behave more Ethiopian than Tigre Amhara and Oromo combined together which is nauseating.
I had to utter all these that the so called Gurage ethnic has to analyse the factors threatening its collective existence and plan instead of leading life as usual.

I truly share your concern as well. I am not saying that Ethiopia’s survival as a nation is guaranteed, but its continued existence as a united and sovereign country is both a destiny and a necessity for all of its more than 84 nations and nationalities. I know that hostile forces are working tirelessly, around the clock, to destroy everything Ethiopian, taking advantage of the moment. Yet in doing so, they are digging their own grave deeper than ever. In the end, they will lose to Fano. At this critical time, Fano represents the only real hope and a formidable challenge to Oromummaa. All the maneuvers by OLF–PP are ultimately aimed at stopping Fano, while they assume that dealing with everyone else is a cakewalk.
Had things gone as PP–OLF had envisioned (disarming Fano in just three days) one can only imagine how Ethiopia would have been robbed of her very soul. It is difficult to even imagine how many tribes OLF would have dragged into war or swallowed altogether, Gurage being one of these tribes. But thanks to Fano, Oromummaa was kept fully occupied and, in fact, was dealt a major blow. Fano thwarted many plans that could have otherwise been unleashed against other ethnic groups.
Of course, we must still heed this age-old saying:
እግር አለው አገር — ይሄዳል እንደ ሰው፤
በረጅም ምንሽር (ጠመንጃ) ጀግና ካልመለሰው።
A country has legs—it can walk away like a person,
if a hero does not call it back with a long spear (or gun).
