From the few videos of books written on these two wars and read on Youtube I watched, three facts come clear:

1. a complete absence of intelligence on the enemy during the war strategy planning and during field operations showing how tightly Sha'bia controlled the Eritrean population.

2. Porous Ethiopian intelligence. Sha'bia had infiltrerated the Ethiopian military, intelligence and no doubt Mengistu and Meles offices. Very possible, the US, MI5 and Mosad passed intelligence to Sha'bia.

3. conflicts among communal decision making generals leading to absence of an overriding and single authority with a veto power to guide the war. If need be, absence of a single field authority to order an immediate assault without calling a meeting of high military officials around him that consumed time and split decisions.
