A significant majority of Ethiopians experience poverty, with recent data from late 2024/early 2025 suggesting around 72% of the population (86 million people) are multidimensionally poor, the highest rate globally, lacking basic services like health, education, clean water, and electricity. While some sources show progress using income-based measures (around 38% at $3/day in 2021), multidimensional poverty (MPI) reveals widespread deprivation, with figures increasing sharply from 2019 to 2024, impacting children most severely.
