Volcanic eruption near Erta_Ale in Afar expected to have only minor global climate impact as ash plume disrupts flights – experts
The recent eruption of Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano is expected to have only a marginal impact on the global climate, while its ash plume has disrupted international flight operations as far as India, according to experts cited by Russian news agency TASS and the BBC.
Climatologist Alexey Kokorin, from the Nature and People Foundation, told TASS that ash emissions from Hayli Gubbi are unlikely to cause a pronounced cooling effect because the plume did not reach the stratosphere.
He estimated that the eruption could lower the global average surface air temperature by about 0.05°C during the 2025–2026 winter, compared to projections without the eruption, describing the impact as “negligible.”
According to the BBC, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the ash plume has now reached northern India, including Delhi, prompting flight cancellations, delays and rerouting. India’s aviation regulator has asked airlines to “strictly avoid” affected airspace.
According to a report by #UAE-based outlet The National, a number of flights to and from the UAE have been cancelled following a volcanic eruption in Ethiopia that has caused widespread travel disruption. The report said Akasa Air cancelled all flights to and from Abu_Dhabi, Jeddah and Kuwait on Tuesday, after grounding the same routes on Monday.
Yesterday reported, citing local media and international monitoring agencies, that the eruption occurred on the morning of 23 November 2025 near Mount Erta Ale in Ethiopia’s Afar Region, in what experts say may be the first recorded activity at the site in thousands of years.
