The Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia's Afar Desert just erupted for the first time in thousands of years.
This eruption shows that the ground is being pulled apart, slowly turning the Afar area into a new part of the Red Sea.
Over millions of years, the Red Sea will keep growing and flood this desert, making a new ocean.
The volcano's fire and ash are like a warning sign that the land is breaking open to let the sea come in.

The Afar Depression is already beneath sea level and its only a matter of time when earthquakes split the Red Sea into Ethiopia

Eritrea's Coast is only 1 meter above Sea level, the Afar Depression is 400 meters beneath sea level. Now it only takes a crack in Eritreas Coast to flood the Afar Depression
