Prince refused to sing on "We Are The World" because he felt the title given to the 1985 musical event "USA for Africa" was misleading, as Ethiopia was the only country in Africa experiencing a terrible man-made famine during that time. 10 years later at the American Music Awards in 1995, Prince stood silently sucking his lollipop during the song “We Are The World” to express his disdain for the song. 
The proper etiquette for the National Anthem is to place your right hand over your heart and stand at attention. Prince didn't do that, so it is fair to say that he disrespected Ethiopia.
