Following some senior military generals who in the past publicly urged political leaders to prioritize dialogue over continued warfare, citing the exhaustion of troops and the need to avoid further sacrifices, Col. Aklilu Abebe has now openly joined that quiet call.
Col. Aklilu Abebe explained that after eight years of continued fighting, the troops are tired, and it is time to look for solutions through dialogue rather than continued conflicts.
The problem is that calling for a peaceful resolution to the country's conflicts can come at a cost. Brig. Gen. Kebede Regasa, who openly said,
We don't want to pay any more sacrifices. Stakeholders should sit down and discuss,
stressing how the military is tired of civil war, was recently denied promotion.
Similarly, Dr. Mengesha Fentaw, who served as head of the Amhara region’s communication bureau, lost his position only a week after expressing hope for direct talks with Fano rebels.
As if those internal conflicts haven't drained the country enough, Chief of Staff Gen. Berhanu Jula now signaled the opening of the door to a new war.
In his speech yesterday, he declared that his forces setting their eyes to "annex" the Eritrean port of Assab, a message that suggests more death and destruction ahead for an already demoralized military.
