ጽምዶ = Engagement, meaning, the strength of the mental and emotional connection people feel toward each other, because when people who share the same region are engaged, it unlocks their potential to find a common ground for peaceful coexistence and build trust on both a personal and collective level.
ጽምዶ is not መደመር። መደመር is concept that revolves around cross border trade, driven by the mutual expectation that both parties will benefit.
In other words, መደመር allows countries to acquire goods and services they lack by trading with countries that have a surplus of those items.
For example, Ethiopia has the largest donkey population in the world, with estimates around 10.6 million donkeys. Eritrea, on the other hand, has fewer than 700,000 donkeys, which is considered relatively low by African standards. But what Eritrea lacks in donkey population she makes up in the highest percentage of educated people.
Therefore, መደመር would allow Eritrea to acquire donkeys from Ethiopia to reduce vehicle emissions, while at the same time, Ethiopia can greatly benefit from Eritrean scholars to stabilize its economy, wean off its addiction to foreign aid, build a quality healthcare system, foster innovation and creativity, and reduce crime and corruption by nurturing a civilized mindset, and the strengthening of state institutions.
As you can see, ጽምዶ is not a concept, but rather is central to coexistence, mutual respect, tolerance, and the recognition of others' right to exist. To put it bluntly, መደመር take a backseat to ጽምዶ every day of the week! You can't have መደመር without ጽምዶ, but you can have ጽምዶ without መደመር. Lets that simmer in your head.
