Over 74,000 Ethiopian soldiers deserted this year, outpacing the 60,000 new conscripts, according to a leaked report from the Ethiopian Military Council.
A copy of the report that was obtained by Ethio Forum media shows that desertions before and after frontline deployment have become alarmingly common, posing a growing crisis for ENDF army generals.

News reports from Ethiopia imply that Ambassador Gen. Bacha Debele may soon be replaced, though it is unclear whether he will return to the army.
As we recall, his final television interview in uniform, conducted with Fana Television at the end of the Tigray war, was detailed in stark terms how the Ethiopian army was “brutally decimated” by the Eritrean Defense Forces during a failed offensive to seize the Assab port at the Bure front in June 2000 led primarily by Gen. Werede and other TPLF generals.
His famous "እንደጉድ ተጨፈጨፍን" witness account at that time, made Abiy Ahmed and other ENDF officials furious.
Shortly afterward, Gen. Bacha Debele was removed from the army and unexpectedly appointed as Ethiopia’s Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary to Kenya.
