• Couple Abducted Near Lemen (June 2023)
A couple (anonymized for privacy), traveling from Hosanna (Hadiya Zone) to near Addis Ababa (Southwest Shoa), were abducted in June 2023. The kidnappers demanded 1 million birr; through a loan, the family paid and secured the couple’s release after 11 days of captivity filled with physical and psychological abuse.

• Governor Bekele Kacha Abducted and Killed (June 2023)
Around the same period in June 2023, the governor of Saden Sodo district, Bekele Kacha, was abducted from his home. A ransom of 10 million birr was demanded. Tragically, he was found dead two days later, despite ransom negotiations.

• Tadele Lomba and Colleagues (July 2023)
In July 2023, Tadele Lomba (pseudonym) and eight colleagues were kidnapped while traveling in a company vehicle near Metehara in East Shewa (Oromia). Kidnappers demanded 3 million birr, but after negotiation, a ransom of 1.3 million birr was paid and the group was released following seven days of torture including sexual assault.

• More Than 100 University Students & Passengers Kidnapped (July 2024)
In early July 2024, over 100 people, including many students, were abducted from buses in Oromia’s restive regions. The kidnappers, believed to be OLA fighters, demanded sums up to 1 million birr—some families were asked for 500,000 birr specifically.

• World Vision Health Workers (June 2024)
On June 28, 2024, four World Vision health workers were kidnapped in West Gondar Zone while en route to a refugee camp. Three of them were released weeks later after ransom payments.

• Ethiopian Electric Power Workers (Sept 2023)
Six employees of Ethiopian Electric Power working on the Aluto geothermal project near Batu town (East Shewa Zone, Oromia) were abducted in September 2023. The kidnappers demanded 10 million ETB.

• Driver Kidnapped — Body Found After Ransom (June 2024)
In mid-June 2024, a man in his 30s was kidnapped in Kemise (Amhara region). His family negotiated a ransom down from 2 million birr to 500,000 birr, which they paid—but a few days later his body was discovered.

• Kidnappings in Tigray — Case of Mahlet Teklay (2024)
In Tigray, a girl named Mahlet Teklay, age 16, was abducted on March 19, 2024, while traveling to a tutoring session in Adawa City. Ransom of 3 million birr was demanded. She was found dead in June after three months of captivity, coming as part of a broader increase in regional kidnappings.

Also, a child relative was kidnapped earlier in 2024 with a ransom of 4 million birr—released after a week.
