None in Amara and Tigrey were accused of opposing the programs and laws the socialist republic of Ethiopia. In this regard, the muslim religious leaders of Oromo, Southeast and Southwest also suffered persecution based on ethnicity. One such Imam was Gurage's Imam Sayyid Abdella who shot and killed extrajudicially by masked kidnappers.
