Statement delivered by the Delegation of Eritrea at the International Meeting, “Stockholm+ 50: a Healthy Planet for the Prosperity of All – Our responsibility, Our opportunity” 2-3 June, 2022

Excelencies,
Ladies and gentleman

It is my honor to address you this afternoon on behalf of the Government of the State of Eritrea.

It heightens our concerns to think that we are losing the fight of protecting our one and only planet, but this is the reality of the situation. No Glasgow pact nor renewed commitments can undo the harm done to our planet, unless we fulfill our past commitments and promises.

While we are celebrating the Stockholm+50 International meeting and commemorating the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment, we should ask ourselves: What is our world looking like today compared to 50 years ago? Notwithstanding the many meetings and conferences held, what actual advancement have we made to secure a healthy planet for all?

The Government of the State of Eritrea enacted a national ban on plastic bags in early 2005, today, Eritreans use cloth, nylon, or straw bags, many of which are locally manufactured. Eritrea as one of the countries in the developing world whose GHG emission footprint is close to none, is committed to embarking on a carbon-neutral sustainable development pathway within the decade of action.

Realizing the critical importance of biodiversity and ecosystems services in supporting economic growth, sustainable development, livelihood, and human well-being and its contribution to achieving the 2030 agenda, the Government of the State of Eritrea has developed and mainstreamed a National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) that encompass 18 ecosystem-based targets, mainly on marine, agriculture and terrestrial setting.

Eritrea is committed to undertaking effective measures to stop the loss of and protect, biodiversity and ecosystem services, which is fundamental to achieving the sustainable development goals and rebuilding a resilient post-pandemic world.

Eritrea, like most other countries in our region, has a very vulnerable ecosystem. It is among the countries hardest hit by the effects of climate change, due to its geographic location and low adaptive capability. Recurrent drought, unpredictable patterns of rainfall, spatial and temporal variability and subsequent water scarcity and depletion, crop failure and livestock death, genetic erosion, loss of endemic species, and the list goes on. All these difficulties, unless skillfully addressed, will erode the resilience of communities and add up to the embedment of poverty, and challenge development progress.

As climate change is borderless, no country, regardless of its emission contribution and coping capabilities, can escape from its impacts. Comparable to its scale and magnitude, mitigation of climate change impacts requires concerted global efforts and can only be achieved, if the international community, based on the principles of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), makes an ambitious contribution toward Greenhouse Gas emission reduction on the bases of equity and in accordance with their common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities (CBDRRC).

Eritrea acknowledges the need for a clear strategic framework, so as to contribute to averting global biodiversity loss. This indeed will contribute to the sustainable development goals and pave the way for the attainment of the vision:
living in harmony with nature.
Excellencies,
Ladies and gentleman

The reference to political will is often made in various fora but the political will is determined by all of us, the International Community. On this occasion, let us renew our commitments and show solidarity with the countries most affected by climate change and let us ensure that another 50 years won’t pass-by without having secured a safer planet for generations to come.

Eritrea with all its challenges, past and present, is fully committed to adhere to the commitments it made under the UNFCCC convention and is guided by the principles therein.

I thank you for your kind attention.

STATEMENT DELIVERED BY THE DELEGATION OF ERITREA DURING THE THIRD UN CONFERENCE ON LANDLOCKED DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AWAZA, TURKMENISTAN, 5-8 AUGUST 2025

https://shabait.com/2025/08/07/statemen ... gust-2025/

Mr. President

Mr. Secretary General

Excellencies

Distinguished delegates,

I am greatly honored to address the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries and wish to extend my delegation’s deep appreciation to the people and Government of Turkmenistan for the warm welcome and hospitality, and for organizing and hosting successfully this important international conference.

The challenges of international trade, connectivity, and economic development faced by LLDCs, comprising 32 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, have been the focus of dedicated global attention for over two decades. The Almaty Programme of Action and the Vienna Programme of Action, marked important milestones in this collective effort. The Awaza Programme of Action (2024–2034) now also represents the next critical phase, consolidating past gains while addressing persistent gaps and emerging priorities.

Mr. President,

Eritrea as a transit state with a long coastline, participated in these conferences to underscore its firm conviction that solidarity and partnership among developing countries are critical for the attainment of sustainable peace and development in the spirit of South-South Cooperation.

The recent UN progress report on the implementation of the Vienna Program of Action shows that the LLDCs have made limited progress towards the much-needed structural transformation, characterized by inadequate road and rail systems, unreliable energy and communication systems and a trading system typified by a low level of diversification and low value addition.

These challenges are equally emblematic of their transit neighbors who are also facing similar infrastructural, human resource, technical challenges and financial constraints. Therefore, the need for solidarity and partnership in the implementation of the Awaza Program of Action becomes critical, necessitating a more comprehensive approach for meaningful regional cooperation that creates a solid platform for heavy investments in infrastructural and technological connectivity, value addition, as well as enhancing technical and human capacities in landlocked and transit developing countries.

Equally important is for landlocked and transit developing states to adopt their own policies to effectively navigate and address prescriptive economic policies and unfair trading systems, guided by strong political commitment to mutual respect and mutual benefits one that is grounded on and consistent with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, including full respect for international law and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Mr. President,

As part of Eritrea’s developmental aspirations, rehabilitating and building roads, communication systems, and economic programs have been among its priorities to address domestic needs and to enhance regional connectivity for better growth. Moreover, its contribution to safe navigation and maritime security cannot be overemphasized enough due to its strategic location along the Red Sea coast. Eritrea has successfully maintained peace and stability. Yet, the vision for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Horn of Africa region has been frustrated for several generations by policies of polarization, often sanctioned by external actors, and this will continue unless the countries in the region adopt a strategy that fosters political goodwill and sound policies to address all the impediments to regional cooperation.

Eritrea has been stressing moving to a regional cooperation and economic integration among countries of the region would be helpful to unleash the full potential of the sub-region to achieve tangible progress in improving infrastructural links, engaging in joint development projects, as well as harmonizing and streamlining policies and procedures on the movements of goods and people. This should be our commitment to our citizens to live in peace, prosperity, and dignity.

I thank you!

Alemseged Tesfai returned to London, after a productive tour in the USA. His trip included valuable interactions with scholars and community members across the country. A highlight of his tour was speaking to young Eritrean professionals in Washington, D.C. In New York, where he delivered insights at the United Nations and facilitated a virtual meeting connecting Ethiopians and others from the Horn of Africa.

In London, he gave a presentation to a distinguished audience that included African intellectuals, diplomats, scholars, media representatives, and journalists. Overall, the tour was a significant success. To celebrate his return and bid him farewell, we hosted a dinner with B/Salih Abdella and me. It was an enjoyable and meaningful gathering. We extend our best wishes to him for a safe journey back to Asmara.

____________

Following last week’s enriching book event at the UN, I had the pleasure of welcoming H.E. Philbert Aaron, Permanent Representative of Dominica to the United Nations, to @Eritrea_UN. As promised, I presented him with a copy of Alemseged Tesfai’s powerful historical work, a testament to Eritrea’s rich literary tradition and enduring national spirit.

We held a candid and thoughtful exchange on the broader decolonization process in Africa, with a particular focus on Eritrea’s unique and often misrepresented experience. Eritrea’s decolonization process was hijacked by the big four powers, who, instead of facilitating a genuine post-colonial transition, enabled its forceful annexation by Ethiopia.

This grave injustice was buried in global discourse, as Ethiopia’s narrative dominated, framing Eritrea's liberation struggle as a ‘secessionist war,’ rather than what it truly was: a legitimate war of decolonization and national liberation. Many states, misled by this framing, failed to recognize the lawful and moral foundations of Eritrea|s struggle.

Alemseged’s book, courageously exposes this dark and distorted chapter of African history. His work is a vital contribution to setting the historical record straight — especially within the Global South, where the legacy of anti-colonial resistance remains a shared and unifying force. @AmbStesfamariam

This has been a season not only for annual conference & festival for Eritreans in the USA, but also a busy schedule for diplomatic engagements.

In this regard, I had a pleasure of receiving the Ambassador of Sudan who paid a courtesy call to our Embassy and a week-long visits to the Embassies of Somalia, Uganda, Cuba, Canada, Cameroon, Egypt, Italy, and South Sudan; engaging in productive exchanges on matters of mutual interest to our countries.

Participated at the African Ambassadors Economic Forum organized by @giaafrica, delivering a statement under the theme: Trade Not Aid for Africa, highlighting Eritrea’s experience in pursuing politically independent path and self-reliant development agenda; a road full of challenges, yet the only viable way forward for true African Renaissance.

To undermine ✨🇪🇷 Eritrea's sovereignty✨, numerous global news outlets often label Eritrea as a small nation. In reality, ✨Eritrea ✨is larger than 100 countries, and its territory could encompass more than 11 countries combined 🌎.
