Early History: Assab began as a small Afar fishing village with limited contact with its hinterland.
Italian Colonial Era: In 1869, the port was acquired by the Italian Rubattino Shipping Company, and in 1882, it became the first Italian colonial possession in Africa, laying the foundation for Italian Eritrea. During this period, Assab was developed into an important port with infrastructure connecting it to the Eritrean highlands.
World War II and British Administration: Following Italy's defeat in World War II, Assab came under British Military Administration.
Having said that, the Wuchalie treaty is the Wuchalie treaty.
