During the 20 years he was in power, Marcos borrowed billions of dollars from the IMF and the World Bank to build high rise buildings in the capital, Manila, to create the illusion of "prosperity", which enticed many people in the rural areas to migrate to the capital looking for jobs, but ended up creating the world's largest crime-infested slums. As a result, Manila's population grew from 7 million to 13 million people within a short period of time.
By the time Marcos was ousted in 1986, the country's external debt had ballooned to $26 billion -- a 4,300% rise.
Debt is the instrument Neo-colonial powers use to control a country and its people. More than half of the Philippines' export earnings is used to pay only the interest on a debt that keeps rising with each passing year.
The IMF's recommended "debt restructuring reforms" for the Philippines included the shipping of millions of young Filipina girls and women to the Arab world as house maid to generate revenue through remittances. Similar "reforms" introduced in Ethiopia also created "የመዳም ቅመሞች" -- a term of endearment the 2 million Ethiopian maids shipped to Arab countries use for themselves to form stronger bonds during difficult times.
Despite millions of Filipino people being forced into a life of indentured servitude to help pay their country's debt, the country's external debt keeps rising. The debt that was $26 billion in 1986 had ballooned to a staggering $283 billion dollars in 2025!!!

Worst of all, in 2022, the Neo-colonial powers installed the son of Ferdinand Marcos sr. as president of the Philippines to keep the country shackled to debt slavery forever!
