Eritreans, regardless of their political leanings, condemned the behavior of the mafia regime when it incarcerated the father of Maebel Kiflay for a crime his son was merely presumed to have committed. The regime has accused Maebel of not paying enough taxes in Eritrea, despite the fact that he is simply a YouTuber who earns a living in the United States.
By holding Maebel’s father as a hostage, the regime attempted to blackmail and extort Maebel into toeing their line — a move that only further enraged Eritreans. Even some of the regime’s most die-hard supporters are beginning to lose patience with the incompetence of the alcoholic tyrant, and many are now openly demanding change.
