Ethiopia today finds itself increasingly ensnared by its own historical narratives, or more precisely, by a selective and often inaccurate reading of the region’s complex history. Its national discourse continues to be shaped by distorted interpretations of historical events, particularly regarding Eritrea, the Horn of Africa, and the Red Sea region, as recent rhetoric has made clear.

This misreading has led to misguided policy choices, inflated notions of entitlement, and a persistent tendency to interpret regional dynamics through an entrenched, mythologized lens of past glory, fueled, in part, by the legacy of Ethiopianists, media, and other actors, including conflict entrepreneurs, who helped cement these distorted narratives

Unfortunately, successive Ethiopian regimes have entangled themselves in a self-created quagmire, deliberately perpetuating a cycle of grievance and ambition, and pursuing policies untethered from contemporary realities or legal norms, but rooted instead in outdated and romanticized visions of history.

This mindset, cultivated and sustained by successive Ethiopia|n regimes, has also fostered a political psyche defined by grievance, entitlement, and strategic miscalculations, an approach that continues to undermine prospects for genuine regional cooperation, stability, and mutual respect.

Why is it that a country on the verge of disintegration of its own volition almost always tries to hide its own misgivings by projecting a false image of itself as being invincible?

I recently visited an online forum where former Yugoslavians, mainly Serbians, congregate to discuss the events that led to their country's demise, and where most of the participants express their failure to influence the other ethnic groups in the country into having the same expansionist mindset as theirs at a time when their subjects viewed them as occupiers and oppressors, and wanted to separate themselves from the uncivilized chauvinists.

It won't be long before we start seeing a similar online platform run by PP cadre Horus blaming his Ethiopian subjects for everything under the sun.
