Eri- diplomacy!

Post by Zmeselo » 11 Jul 2025, 14:31

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to engage in a frank and constructive exchange with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. I reiterated, Eritrea’s consistent and principled stance on regional issues. We agreed on the importance of maintaining peace and security, upholding international law, and respecting the UN Charter, particularly the inviolability and sanctity of borders and the territorial integrity of states as enshrined therein.

Welcomed H.E. Gregor W. Koessler, PR of Austria, who paid a visit to @Eritrea_UN. Great opportunity to catch up on global and regional developments, challenges and opportunities at #UN80. Our world is in turmoil and multilateralism is being challenged...but we have no choice but to work harder to strengthen the system and make it "fit for purpose". Agreed to collaborate and cooperate, and strengthen Eritrea-Austria bilateral relations.

Welcomed H.E. Mr. Omar Said Omar Al Kathiri, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman, to
@Eritrea_UN. We held fruitful discussions on regional issues of mutual concern, and explored avenues to deepen collaboration in pursuit of lasting peace, stability, and security in the region. We reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening the historic and longstanding relations between Eritrea and Oman.

Tour de France: African star Biniam Girmay aiming for glory

July 10, 2025

Africa's cycling star Biniam Girmay has a tough task to repeat his successes from the 2024 Tour de France, but remains optimistic. He is unsure whether he will even compete the upcoming World Championships in Rwanda.

Last year, Africa's most prominent cyclist, Biniam Girmay, https://www.dw.com/en/eritreas-biniam-g ... a-69532365 won three sprint stages in the Tour de France https://www.dw.com/en/tour-de-france-20 ... a-73068134 and took home the green jersey for the best points-scoring rider, usually a sprinter. He was the first black professional cyclist from Africa to do any of these things, marking a historic moment for African cycling and his home country of Eritrea. https://www.dw.com/en/eritrea/t-66187188

In Asmara, the capital, Girmay was welcomed with a motorcade as people danced and cheered for their hero.

This year, even though fans from Eritrea continue to celebrate him despite being thousands of miles away, Girmay has found life on the Tour a bit more challenging.

Form is true, but success remains elusive

Nevertheless, he finished second in the opening stage behind the Belgian Jasper Philipsen.
I felt good and enjoyed the day,
Girmay told DW afterward.
But I had to do everything on my own, so I used up a lot of energy. And Jasper was the fastest in the end.
Despite converting his good form into a second-place finish, the 25-year-old wasn't that happy.
I'm a bit disappointed,
said Girmay.
I would at least have liked to have had a teammate with me. That has to get better. But it is what it is. We're at the Tour de France and not everything will always go perfectly.
Things have not gone quite so well in the subsequent stages, with Girmay slowed by a knee injury. Despite that, he still has big goals ahead: He wants to win at least one stage again and fight for the green jersey.

A more mature person

Does the pressure of having to repeat last year's success weigh on him?
No, it just gives me motivation,
replied the sprint specialist from Eritrea.
I've spoken to a few guys who have been there many times and they say that winning just one stage is super tough. And I had three in one year. That gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of my career.
Despite his success, Girmay has not changed as a person, according to people close to him.
There are more people who want something from him. But he's still the same,
his coach and sporting director Aike Visbeek said.
His career is progressing fast. But it's not so much the green jersey that has changed him, but more the fact that he is a maturing young man.

This mature young athlete is aware of his special role as a representative of Africa. https://www.dw.com/en/adrien-niyonshuti ... a-62499588
I want to do the best for myself and my family first,
said Girmay.
Unfortunately, I'm the only rider from Africa this year. But of course it is very nice for me to represent my country and also my continent.
Girmay's start in Rwanda remains unclear

Girmay is less clear on the World Championships in Rwanda https://www.dw.com/en/rwanda/t-65503437, which take place from September 21 to 28. It is set to be the first World Championships https://www.dw.com/en/world-championshi ... a-71813214 on the African continent, but at times, he himself has even questioned his participation.

He complained that the World Championships course was made for climbers, not for sprinters.
It's a milestone for Africa. But for me, the course is far beyond my own capabilities,
said Girmay at the beginning of the year.
I don't know if I would even make it to the finish. There's no point in competing then.
But he left one door open. If his country called him, he would be there.

During the Tour de France, Girmay did not want to say anything about the World Championships. But coach Visbeek is still skeptical.
He [Girmay] is still disappointed with the course. I don't think you really help the African cyclists with a course like this. You make it very difficult and that's sad,
he told DW.

Right now, though, Girmay is entirely focused on the Tour de France. Thanks to his participation in the intermediate sprints, he is still in the running for the green jersey. He has also not had any serious crashes so far, unlike the winner of the first stage, Philipsen, https://www.dw.com/en/jasper-philipsen- ... a-73199453 who is out. And this Tour de France route still offers a few opportunities for sprinters like him.

The Tour de France https://www.letour.fr/en/ is an iconic spectacle in the world of sports. The annual, grueling bicycle race is the most prestigious race for professional cyclists. The storied history of the Tour began in the summer of 1903 as a publicity stunt https://www.bikeraceinfo.com/tdf/tdf%20 ... y1900.html to promote a local newspaper, but it has since transformed into a global phenomenon that captures the imagination of die-hard bicyclists and even casual observers of the sport.

Since its inception, the Tour has been overwhelmingly comprised of white European riders. When Black riders entered the sport and competed in the Tour, their mere presence was a significant milestone, as they fought the ever-present barrier of systemic racism https://procyclinguk.com/the-history-of ... de-france/ in the sport. Their contributions to cycling should be honored and celebrated.

As the 2025 Tour de France is currently underway, here are several Black cyclists who have raced in the event and made historical strides in the sport.

Biniam Girmay (Eritrea)

In 2024, Biniam Girmay became the first Black rider and the first Eritrean to win a stage in the Tour de France, https://www.cbs42.com/sports/ap-eritrea ... nce-stage/ winning stages 3, 8, and 12. He also claimed the green jersey (points classification) in the same year. Previously, he made history in 2022 by winning a stage at the Giro d'Italia, becoming the first Black African to win a stage in a Grand Tour. Regarded as one of the most exciting bicyclists in the sport today, Girmay has multiple stage wins at races such as the La Tropicale Amissa Bongo, the Tour de Suisse, Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, and the Circuit Franco-Belge.

Yohann Gène (Guadeloupe, French Caribbean)

Yohann Gène holds the distinction of being the first Black participant in the modern era of the Tour de France, https://andscape.com/features/the-day-y ... de-france/ having ridden in seven editions of the race for Team Europcar in 2011. He rode the Tour de France seven times from 2011 to 2017 and was notably the first Black rider to finish the Tour de France (in 2011). Outside of the Grand Tours, Gène has claimed several victories in the La Tropicale Amissa Bongo, a primary African stage race.

Daniel Teklehaimanot (Eritrea)

In 2015, Daniel Teklehaimanot earned a historical achievement by becoming the first Black African rider to wear a leader's jersey https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/this-i ... de-france/ in the Tour de France, donning the polka dot jersey (King of the Mountains). Teklehaimanot is a multiple-time African Champion in both the Individual Time Trial (2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013) and the Team Time Trial (with multiple wins). In his home country, he’s won the Eritrean National Road Race Championship in 2008, 2012, and 2016, and the Eritrean National Time Trial Championship in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2018.

Merhawi Kudus (Eritrea)

Merhawi Kudus made history in 2015 when he was named in the start list for the Tour de France, https://teamafricarising.org/the-evergr ... o-cyclist/ finishing 84th in the General Classification. Alongside his teammate and countryman Daniel Teklehaimanot, he became one of the first two black African riders to start the Tour de France. At 21 years old, he was also the youngest rider in the race that year. He is also a multiple-time Eritrean National Champion (2018 and 2022) and the winner of the Time Trial title in 2021. Most recently, he won the National Road Race Championship in 2025.

Nic Dlamini (South Africa)

Nic Dlamini made history https://teamafricarising.org/nic-dlamin ... de-france/ in 2021 when he became the first black South African cyclist to compete in the Tour de France, riding for Team Qhubeka NextHash. Although he didn’t complete the race, as he finished outside the time limit on Stage 9, his participation was a landmark moment for South African cycling and another significant step towards making the sport more diverse. He also represented South Africa at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.

Tsgabu Grmay (Ethiopia)

A pioneering figure for Ethiopian cycling, Tsgabu Grmay was the first Ethiopian professional cyclist and the first Ethiopian to compete in and finish all three Grand Tours. He competed in the Giro d'Italia (2015), Tour de France (2016, 2017), and Vuelta a España (2015, 2016, 2019, 2020). He also represented Ethiopia at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, becoming the first Ethiopian cyclist in 44 years to reach the Olympics.

Natnael Berhane (Eritrea)

Continuing the legacy of Eritrean riders, Natnael Berhane is renowned in the cycling world for his endurance and tenacity. He has competed https://firstcycling.com/rider.php?r=6257 in the Tour de France (2016, 2019). He is also a two-time winner of the road race at the African Road Championships, in 2011 and 2012. Berhane has won the Eritrean National Road Race Championship titles in 2015 and 2019, as well as the National Time Trial Championship in 2014.

Oh my! Thanks, bro, for all the information you've been posting for us. I am sure the majority of us appreciate them, including the helpless, clueless, and ever-desperate Deqi Atarit, the psychopath, almaz, and other useless participants. Viva Eritrea and all our neighboring countries, except those daytime dreamers who keep drooling over products that are not theirs, aka PM Abey Ahmed, the idiot of the Horn! LOL!
