Complain for 5 minutes about Eritrea, without mentioning it.
@AmbStesfamariamA classic Freudian slip: the Ethiopian representative inadvertently admits what we've known all along, that this is a politicized mandate, one Ethiopia helped engineer with its sponsors and surrogates back in 2012. No surprises there, could not keep the sheepskin for long.
The mandate has become emblematic of the politicization of country-specific resolutions. Eritrea has consistently rejected the legitimacy of the mandate due to the politically motivated origins and sponsorship of the resolutions and the sustained use of dubious sources, including individuals with affiliations to externally funded groups and individuals with stated "regime change" agendas.
Moreover, recent voting records affirm this erosion. There were no recorded votes from 2012-2018. While appearing uncontroversial procedurally, the absence of a vote masked growing discontent, especially from countries in the Global South. The silence at the time DOES NOT indicate endorsement.
In the recorded votes of the 2019-2025 renewals, Council members expressed mounting discomfort through abstentions and "no" votes, reflecting a Council that is divided and unconvinced. The voting trajectory on Eritrea’s mandate from 2012 to 2024 illustrates a steady decline in legitimacy.
The growing opposition and abstention, especially from African and Global South states, highlight a clear political discomfort with the continued singling out of Eritrea. The mandate's reliance on a shrinking bloc of Global North states says a lot about the selective, biased, and politically motivated mandate that is not grounded in objective concern for human rights.
In line with @UN_HRC framework to terminate such mandates, given the clear procedural, political, and substantive justifications, Council members should oppose the renewal of the Eritrea mandate and support a return to the principles of non-selectivity and equal treatment. Eritrea should not be subject to indefinite exceptionalism.
The credibility of the UNHRC, and its ability to command universal respect, depends on its willingness to evolve, correct course, and resist the instrumentalization of its mechanisms for narrow political objectives.
Eritrea's political culture of innate honesty and integrity; its faithful adherence to international law and the Treaties and Agreements it signs (Arbitral Awards with Yemen and Ethiopia respectively among others cases) stem from its national psyche. They are embedded, so to speak, in its DNA.
The positive, seamless, correlation between political culture and individual/personal conduct is exceptionally striking.
Indeed, both in the political and individual realms, Eritrea does not mince its words; nor does it speak with forked tongues.
These are rare, apparently inimitable, attributes/gems in a turbulent region where many political entities of every shade and colour often seem to pander and bow to external diktat; at times competing to be first in the pecking order of loyal and pliant "surrogates"
