As the world gears up for the upcoming UN Summit on food security, some are asking: why Italy? And why Ethiopia — a country ravaged by internal wars and one of the worst food crises on the planet — as the host of the summit?

Italy, the designated “chef”
Let’s start with Italy, called to co-organize the international event. The reasons? Well, Rome hosts the headquarters of three major UN food-related agencies — FAO, WFP, and IFAD — a true institutional “trio” that makes Italy the global reference point for food security. Add some diplomatic “savoir-faire” and Italy’s long tradition of international cooperation, and voilà: this is why the Bel Paese is the perfect partner for such an important event.
Ethiopia, a surprising “stage”
But here’s the detail that makes people raise their eyebrows: the summit will take place in Addis Ababa, the capital of a country where millions of people struggle daily just not to die of hunger. A place where food security is more a mirage than a reality, due to an internal conflict that makes peace seem like a distant utopia.
Ethiopian farmers, the true guardians of the land, often can’t even cultivate because they’re forced to flee their homes due to violence. Abandoned fields, lost harvests, extinguished hopes. Before talking about aid or recipes for “sustainable food systems,” the massacre of civilians must be stopped and farmers allowed to return to their lands.
In particular, it is urgent to stop the massacres in the Amhara region, home to about 30 million people — an open wound no summit can ignore.
Summit paradoxes
This raises some doubts: is this a strategy to shine a spotlight on real emergencies, or just a big show? Or maybe the UN thinks organizing a summit on the topic right where hunger is worst is the best diplomatic irony possible.
The challenge is open
In any case, we must hope this summit leads to more than just nice words and group photos. Because while Italy brings experience and capability, Ethiopia must come out of this event with concrete help, not just a showcase.
Ethiopia must leave this event with a real commitment to stop the massacres of populations who live without media coverage, too often forgotten by the world.
It will be an opportunity to show that, in an increasingly fragile world, food security is not just a conference topic but a fundamental right to guarantee — especially to those, like Ethiopians, who are living firsthand what it means to have nothing to put on their plate.

≛ What’s so hard to understand about Ximdo (ጽምዶ)?
ᕯ Ximdo is about peaceful coexistence, especially for communities along the Eritrea-Ethiopia border ( i.e. Tigray, Amhara, and Afar).
ᕯ The Ximdo message from Tegaru is abundantly clear: if Abiy Ahmed insists on war with Eritrea, he’s free to take it through Amhara or Afar regions, just not through Tigray. They don't want their land to become a battleground.
ᕯ The Ximdo message from Tegaru is abundantly clear: If there are Tegaru who support the war, they’re free to join Abiy Ahmed’s army and face Eritrea’s might, but just not on Tigray soil.
ᕯ However, if Abiy Ahmed tries to punish the people of Tigray [Amhara or Afar] for choosing «peace» with Eritrea, then Eritrea will stand with them and use every means at its disposal to make the incompetent ደም ጠማቂ leader regret.
ᕯ The same principle applies to the Amhara and Afar people: if they allow their land to be used as a launchpad for Abiy Ahmed’s aggression against Eritrea, they should expect Eritrea to side with their adversaries and act against their interests.
ᕯ To put it plainly, Ximdo is not, and never will be, an alliance AGAINST Abiy Ahmed, Amhara, or Afar. It’s a commitment to peace and mutual respect. The choice is clear. Join it!
