At the very least, he is a man of principle. The reality, however, is that many supporters of the Eritrean regime also on this forum, have long maintained that the greatest enemy of the Eritrean nation is the TPLF or Woyane, Agame, or whatever term they choose to use. From that standpoint, it becomes rather difficult to reconcile such a deeply entrenched belief with the subsequent decision to forge an alliance with the very force they had once so vehemently opposed indeed.
When President Isaias Afwerki joined the war against Tigray in 2020, many short legged PFDJ supporters having been subjected to years of state indoctrination harboured profound animosity towards Tigrayans deep seated hatred , and thus supported the war. Now, I find myself wondering how those individuals feel today, in light of evolving political dynamics and the new alliance between the former enemies.
I hold a degree of respect for individuals such as Maebel Kiflay, precisely because he appears to have a red line a core principle that he refuses to compromise on under no circumstance . As for the regime’s supporters, one cannot help but notice a certain blind obedience. If the dictator in Asmara were to proclaim tomorrow that the sky is green, they would no doubt nod in agreement and affirm that, indeed, the sky is green.
