During Yugoslavia's civil wars in the 1990s, the Serbs who were the largest and dominant ethnic group in the country held a myth of Serbian invincibility that they promoted through expansionist rhetoric which was not shared by the other ethnic groups in the country.
Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro broke away from Yugoslavia to avoid being pawns in Serbian wars of territorial expansion, and the end result was a complete dissolution of Yugoslavia.
There's a valuable lesson to draw from this.
