ERITREA — What began in recent days along the Zalambesa–Ambesetegeleba border took a hopeful turn today, as the Rama border crossing opened to welcome guests from Ethiopia’s Tigray region.

Together with their Eritrean communities, they gathered to celebrate a feast that signals a renewed sense of peace and people-to-people solidarity.

Repetition ad nauseam of their toxic/elusive agenda aside, the stale arguments that PP officials and trolls are advancing these days increasingly defy simple logic, common sense, as well as elementary (101) principles and norms of international law and diplomacy.

In this respect, the latest version in town is that they became "disillusioned" in the rapprochement between the two countries when they realized that Eritrea never contemplated, and was not indeed prepared, to partially mortgage or auction its inalienable sovereignty over its maritime assets.

Eritrea’s hardened stance against foreign encroachment is not merely ideological, it is deeply rooted in historical experience. The country’s war of independence was, in large part, a struggle to reclaim sovereignty from external domination.

Post-independence, Eritrea has watched with increasing concern as foreign powers established military bases along the Red Sea -Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, and even within Eritrea itself during the temporary UAE presence in Assab.

The lesson for Eritrean policymakers has been clear: sovereignty is only as secure as the ability to defend it, especially when powerful nations invoke “stability,” “counterterrorism,” or “humanitarian intervention” to justify encroachment.

When your country's flag flies alongside the flag of a country which sold you down the river and thought it was all over and done with!

Operation Don Quixote

The ca. 1590 novel of the character "don Quixote" written by Spanish author Cervantes, tells of how he lost his mind after reading books depicting war heroes. Hence, in peaceful times, with no adversaries to fight against, he jumped on his skinny horse to replicate similar heroism. Confronting enemies created in the figment of his imagination, jumping with joy about non existent victories and roaming around for a while, suddenly woke up from his dream & returned to his normal life.

Similar to this story about madness, leaders of the PP, stressing themselves with absolutely no reason to go to war, are now stressing the poor Ethiopian people too, tired and bloodied by past horrible wars by telling them to "prepare for war".

Everyone knows, what's really scaring them are the internal problems. But to conceal their fear and to rile up the people with jealousy and rise them up they say,

our neighbours have 5000 km's of coastline and we don't even have one port.

For the wise who asks "who denied you a port?", they have no answer.

The difference between the madness of don Quixote and the PP is though, don Quixote's mad intention was to repeat past heroic victories while the PP wants to repeat past devastating defeats. Everyone knows, the result of the past wars and bloodshed to own land that doesn't belong to you. A lot of the PP generals too, related to those past wars, have a humiliating and shameful history.

There can't be greater madness, than repeating past failures.
