whatever the president of Somaliland brings to Addis, it will not be a good news for Djibouti and Hassan Sheik. The two possible issues are the use of Berbera port and/or a renewed talk about MOU. Period.

Ethiopia finds itself in a shaky position, lacking any solid grounds to assert its claims. What recourse remains for them, given their refusal to recognise Somaliland? Such a stance is likely to compel Ethiopian forces to withdraw from Somalia, paving the way for the redeployment of Egyptian troops. While Ethiopia might seek to disrupt Djibouti’s trade links, it remains undeniable that the country requires access to more than a single port; Berbera alone cannot accommodate such demand.

Should Ethiopia contemplate reviving the defunct Memorandum of Understanding, it would undoubtedly ignite a full-scale geopolitical conflict. Somalia, in response, would secure Egyptian arms to support Somali insurgents within Ethiopian borders. It will be intriguing to observe how this scenario unfolds.

Abiy Ahmed’s abandonment of the memorandum followed veiled threats from Turkey, a circumstance that has regrettably remained unchanged.
