Engineering Day, Marked at May-Nefhi College of Engineering and Technology

May-Nefhi College of Engineering and Technology today marked its first-ever ‘Engineering Day’ in an event aimed at promoting research, innovation, and collaboration in the field of engineering.



Speaking at the event, Dr. Araya Zerai, Dean of the College, said the commemoration underscores the growing focus on engineering research and innovation alongside the academic mandate of the institution. Dr. Araya stated that the main objectives of the event are to provide a platform for students to present research works, promote the role of engineering in national development, strengthen partnerships between the college, government institutions, and the community, and inspire interest in engineering among the younger generation.



Dr. Yemane Keleta, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, on his part highlighted the significance of the event in fostering stronger networks among educators, students, and industry professionals, and creating opportunities for the exchange of knowledge and experiences.



The event featured a presentation by Dr. Seife Berhe, Executive Director of Andiamo Mining Company, under the theme

Integration of Geological Engineering and Environmental Sustainability.

Established in 2004, May-Nefhi College of Engineering and Technology provides five-year degree and three-year diploma programs across various fields of engineering, including agricultural, chemical, civil, computer science, electrical and electronics, marine, mechanical, and mining engineering. The College continues to play a key role in producing skilled professionals contributing to the country’s development efforts.

Schools Independence Day Week commences in Central Region

Schools Independence Week in connection with the 34th Independence Day anniversary has officially commenced today at Deb’at hall in Akria sub-zone, under the theme “Our Cohesion-Our Armour”. The Schools Week has been officially opened by Mr. Fesehaye Haile, Governor of the Central Region.



Mr. Belai Habtegabir, head of the education office in the region, said that the commencement of Schools Independence Week beyond providing academic education has significant contribution in nurturing competent students, inculcating nationalism and preserving the noble societal values.



The event was attended by Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, Mr. Abraham Semere, chairman of the regional Assembly as well as other officials in the region.



Schools Independence Day Week in the Central Region will be conducted in 116 kindergartens, 79 elementary, 40 junior as well as in 22 high schools featuring various programs.

Alebu Edible Oil Factory, in Eritrea

(Alebu, Eritrea) – A new pilot food oil factory has been launched in late 2024 in Alebu, located within the Haikota sub-zone of Eritrea.

The initiative marks a significant step toward the establishment of a larger national cooking oil production facility envisioned for the area, in the near future.

Equipped with modern German-made cold press machinery, the Alebu Cooking Oil Factory aims to lay the groundwork for future industrial-scale operations.

The factory currently produces six types of edible oils, utilizing sesame, sunflower, and various other oilseed crops sourced from reserves managed by the Eritrean Crop and Livestock Corporation (ECLC).

In its initial phase, the facility has demonstrated an efficient yield, producing approximately 60 liters of edible oil from every 100 kilograms of oilseeds processed. The remaining byproduct is being repurposed as a high-nutrient animal feed, contributing to the broader goals of sustainable agricultural development in the region.

BanaTom – Tomato and Banana Processing Factory in Eritrea

Established in 2008 in Alebu, within the Haikota sub-zone, BanaTom operates under the National Crop and Livestock Corporation (ECLC). The factory primarily focuses on processing tomato paste, which is currently its main product, alongside banana-based products.

Production at BanaTom is seasonal, relying on tomato pulp harvested between March and April, as tomatoes collected during this period meet the optimal quality standards for paste production.



To support this, agro-industrial farms under ECLC, located in areas such as Gerset, Fesko, Adi-Omar, Afhimbol, Molober, and others, primarily cultivate tomatoes to supply the factory.

BanaTom has the capacity to process up to 500 quintals (50 tons) of tomatoes into paste, within a 24-hour period.

While initially intended for export, the factory’s output is largely consumed domestically due to high local demand. Its tomato paste is widely used by colleges, hotels, boarding schools, the military, and other institutions.



The product has achieved the European Union quality standard (20–21 Brix), as confirmed by a test conducted in Italy. This high rating reflects the product’s purity, made entirely from organically grown tomatoes, without any chemical additives or preservatives.

During the harvest season, BanaTom operates at full capacity to process and store enough tomato paste to meet national demand throughout the year.

Excerpt from Alemseghed Tesfai’s New Book: An African People's Quest for Freedom and Justice

On 6 April 1941, British forces under General Alan Cûnningham captured Addis Ababa. That same day, Colonel Orde Wingate led Emperor Haile Selassie into Debre Markos, the capital of Gojam province.

Haile Selassie, believing that his return from exile as Emperor would be immediate and triumphant, had requested air transport to join [ deleted ]’s forces in the capital. His request was denied. Instead, he had to wait nearly a full month — until 5 May 1941 — before finally re-entering Addis Ababa.

However, his hopes of quickly restoring imperial authority were soon dashed. It became evident that the British had no intention of fully reinstating Ethiopian sovereignty. Their actions were guided by broader imperial ambitions in the Horn of Africa — a region where they had no prior foothold and which was already under Italian and French colonial control.

In June 1943, under strict British surveillance and forbidden from direct communication with the outside world, Haile Selassie managed to smuggle a secret letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Through his envoy Yilma Deressa, he appealed to the U.S. government for two key objectives:

- American support for Ethiopia’s access to the Red Sea, and
-Inclusion in the Lend-Lease Act — the vast wartime aid program.

At this turning point, as the British Empire weakened and the United States emerged as a global power, the foundations of American strategic interest in the Horn of Africa were laid. This marked the beginning of a U.S. policy that would come to rely on Ethiopia as an anchor state, ultimately reshaping the destiny of Eritrea and the region at large.
