Searches on Suspicion of Forming and Membership of a Domestic Terrorist Organisation (“Brigade N’Hamedu”)

Since this morning (26 March 2025), the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has a total of 19 premises (of which eight in Hesse, four in North Rhine-Westphalia, three in Bavaria, two in Baden-Württemberg, one in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and one in Rhineland-Palatinate each) searched in execution of warrants issued by the Investigating Judge at the Federal Court of Justice. Another search measure in Denmark is being carried out simultaneously.

The measures target 17 suspects who have been identified. They are suspected of forming and/or membership of a domestic terrorist organisation (section 129 para. 1 of the German Criminal Code [StGB], section 129a para 1 no. 1 StGB). The current findings suggest that the suspects assumed senior positions within the so-called “Brigade N’Hamedu”. It is an internationally-connected network that intends to topple the Eritrean government. The branch in Germany has been active since no later than 2022 and has resorted, inter alia, to violence against events in Germany which are supported by the Eritrean government. Some members of the organisation consider violence against German government institutions and their representatives - e.g. police officers deployed to secure said events - as legitimate means. In this context, “Brigade N’Hamedu” is believed to have orchestrated violent clashes on the occasion of so-called Eritrea Festivals in Gießen on 20 August 2022 and 7/8 August 2023, as well as the seminar hosted by an Eritrean association in Stuttgart on 16 September 2023. Numerous police officers sustained in part significant injuries during said clashes.

Today’s measures serve to corroborate the established suspicious circumstances. More than 200 officers of the Federal Criminal Police Office and State-level law enforcement personnel are being deployed.

Another individual, who is suspected of holding a senior position within “Brigade N’Hamedu” in the Netherlands and Germany, has recently been sentenced by a Dutch court to a prison term of several years on account of his participation in clashes in The Hague on 17 February 2024.

የተቃውሞ እንቅስቃሴው በኢትዮጵያ "ወታደራዊ እና ዲፕሎማሲያዊ ማዕከሎች" ሊኖሩት እንደሚችልም አስታውቋል።

ብርጌድ ንሓመዱን የሚቀላቀሉ ኤርትራውያን "ዋስትና ስለሚያገኙበት መንገድ" ከኢትዮጵያ መንግሥት ጋር "መነጋገሩን" የእንቅስቃሴው አመራር ለቢቢሲ ተናግረዋል።

የኤርትራው ፕሬዝዳንት ኢሳያስ አፈወርቂን መንግሥት ከሥልጣን ለማውረድ የሚንቀሳቀሰው "ብርጌድ ንሓመዱ"፤ በአዲስ አበባ ከተማ "22" ተብሎ በሚጠራው አካባቢ በሚገኝ አንድ ህንጻ ላይ የከፈተውን ጽህፈት ቤት ሥራ ያስጀመረው ባለፈው የካቲት አጋማሽ ነበር።

የጽህፈት ቤቱን የምርቃት ሥነ ሥርዓት በሚያሳይ ቪድዮ ላይ፤ የብርጌድ ንሓመዱ አመራሮች የቢሮው መከፈት ለእንቅስቃሴው "እጥፋት" እንደሆነ ሲናገሩ ተደምጠዋል።

እንቅስቃሴውን ከፊት ሆነው ከሚመሩ ግለሰቦች አንዱ የሆኑት አቶ በየነ ገብረእግዚአብሔር፤ ጽህፈት ቤቱ "ተበታትኖ ለቆየው" የብርጌድ ንሓመዱ እንቅስቃሴ "አንድ መገናኛ ማዕከል" እንደሆነ ገልጸዋል።

የጽህፈት ቤቱን መከፈት የተገለጸው ብርጌድ ንሓመዱ ከሌላኛው ተቃዋሚ ድርጅት "የኤርትራ አፋር ብሔራዊ ኮንግረስ" ጋር በመሆን ጥር 19/2017 ዓ.ም. ኤርትራውያን የተገኙበትን ስብሰባ በአዲስ አበባ ከተማ ካካሄደ ከአንድ ወር ገደማ በኋላ ነው።

የብርጌድ ንሓመዱ የዲፕሎማሲ ክፍል ኃላፊ የሆኑት አቶ በየነ ገብረእግዚአብሔር፤ ከዚህ ቀደም በምዕራባውያን ሀገራት ሲከናወን የነበረው የተቃውሞ እንቅስቃሴ "ከሌሎች ሀገራት በተለየ [መንገድ] በኢትዮጵያ መጀመሩን" ለቢቢሲ ተናግረዋል።

የእንቅስቃሴው ተወካዮች ከኢትዮጵያ መንግሥት ባለሥልጣናት ጋር ንግግር ማድረጋቸውን የሚገልጹት አቶ በየነ፤ "ለኢትዮጵያ መንግሥት ያቀረብነው ጥያቄም በኤርትራ ስር ነቀል ለውጥ እንደምናካሂድ ነው" ብለዋል።

But you seem to imply, or you seemed to have chosen to believe, the Eritrean government’s belief: the Eritrean opposition is a terrorist organization. You seem to have outdone the Isayes’ cadres in your characterization of the opposition. They were refrained from calling them terrorists at least for now. They call them agames.
Ato Elias, is it because do you share the cadres’ belief that there is no political belief in Eritrea other than that of Isayes’ , or your hatred to the Ethiopian government blinded you to a point that you characterize the legitimate Eritrean opposition as terrorists. Had it not been the Eritrean opposition opened an office in Ethiopia, would you have called them terrorists. I know you to know the answer. It is the latter.

Germany: Police raids target Eritrean terror group

Police in Germany carried out a major nationwide raid against opponents of the government in Eritrea on Wednesday.

The operation, which targeted 19 properties in six federal states, is directed against 17 people suspected of being members of so-called "Brigade N'hamedu," which is classified as a domestic terrorist organization, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe said in a statement.
What do we know about the police raid?

Eight of the properties were in Hesse, four were in North Rhine-Westphalia, three were in Bavaria, two were in Baden-Württemberg and there was one each in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Rhineland-Palatinate.

More than 200 police officers were involved in the operation.

A raid also took place in neighboring Denmark.

No arrests have been made yet, the statement added.

The 17 suspects are alleged to have been founders or members of the German branch of the Brigade N'hamedu, an international network whose stated aim is "the overthrow of the government in Eritrea," the statement said.

Police allege that some members of the group view violence against German state institutions and police and security forces as legitimate.
What are group members accused of?

The Brigade N'hamedu is accused of orchestrating violent riots at an Eritrean cultural festival in the city of Giessen in Hesse in August 2022 and July 2023, as well as an Eritrean association seminar in Stuttgart in September 2023.

Several police officers were injured in those incidents, some of them seriously, the Federal Prosecutor's Office said.

Another suspect believed to hold a senior role in the Dutch and German chapters of the Brigade N'Hamedu was sentenced to four years in prison.

He was convicted by a Dutch court in September for playing a leading role in riots in the Hague in February 2024, when hundreds of supporters of the Eritrean government held a rally in the center of the Dutch capital city.

Eritrea, a country in the Horn of Africa, fought a war to gain independence from Ethiopia which lasted 30 years until 1991.

The country declared its independence in 1993, with the victorious Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) rebel group seizing power, establishing a one-party, nationalist state and banning all other political activity.

No elections have been held since the country became independent.

Germany is home to over 80,000 Eritrean nationals and people of Eritrean descent, according to the German Foreign Office.

Me, I promise to bring and share news on this forum which may cause you anxiety and denial of facts as presented. There's not much I can do to help you with how you feel after reading shared news.

By the way, Elias, I have no idea you are one of Isayes’ enthusiastic cadres. I knew once you have visited his “highness” in Asmara. But I have no idea that you belong to the echo chamber. You don’t need the Germans and the Dutch to brainwash you about the meaning of terrorism and terrorists. I encourage you to follow my way to understand Eritrea’s politics. I know it is almost impossible for you to do that. Your politics is a strange one. You hate someone first, and then you hate his politics. That has been the way you conduct politics.
I know I am wasting my time, but I give it a try nonetheless to drill some hard facts to your brain.
Let us start from a fact that Isayes is a dictator. He has not held elections for nearly four decades. He does not allow any political party to operate in Eritrea. He imprisoned journalists, politicians, practically everyone he or she has disagreed with him.
There are Eritreans who don’t like that. Eritreans who want an Eritrea that is not totally controlled by a single soul. You MF have the audacity to call them terrorists. Shame on you.
